I think you're really underestimating how many new and younger D&D fans dig into the games past via wikis and what not. The biggest lore lovers I know all started in 5E. Most everyone who started in 3E or earlier I know don't actually seem to know or care about things like lore and settings.

I'm surprised people aren't noticing all the 4E lore nods in the trailer, especially from the Heroes of Shadow and The Shadowfell: Gloomwrought and Beyond books. We even see the Raven Knights in the trailer.

They literally use the term Savage Frontier in the new Realms books, multiple times.

This is completely my own baseless speculation, but I think there is a big fish in the pond that is inspiring WotC on how and why to bring back Dark Sun, and it's name is Fallout. War, war never changes.

Many players do not know the difference between a retcon, and the world just moving on and the state of the world changing. A retcon is "Spider-Man never lost Gwen Stacy." The timeline moving on is "Spider-Man was dating Gwen and then she died."

I'm honestly a huge fan of almost all of these lore developments and how the world is changing. My hat is off to the whole team, they've done the Realms proud in the story department.

The campaign is only dead if you kill it.
