    Defining its own Mythology

I'm in agreement. Rechan might not have expressed his opinion with the utmost tact, but I find the implied "my vision of D&D is more pure and correct than yours because I still play it the same way after 30 years" subtext in a lot of posts far more offensive than anything that he wrote.

To ALL ENWorlders: Did you play 1E AD&D?

Yes. I started with BECM D&D in 1986, then moved on to AD&D 1st Edition within the first year, although I continued to use the "Known World" and some bits from BECM for a while. Later moved on to 2nd Edition AD&D and then the Player's Option books before losing interest until 3rd Edition came out.

    Highlest level D&D character ever

I remember way back when I started playing at the age of 12 or 13, my Magic-User searched a room and the DM told me I found (rolls a d4) "3 million gems, each worth..." (rolls a d4 again) "four million gold pieces." Under a pile of garbage on the floor. This was back when 1 gp was worth 1 XP...

    15 Minute Workday Myth?

I usually just apply a bit of common sense and say that any combat encounter takes at least five minutes of in-game time (unless for some reason tracking time down to the second is important). The actual combat rounds played out may only account for 30 seconds of elapsed in-game time, but...

How would you like the Monsterous Manual organized

The 4e Monster Manual(s) should have one monster per page, all on looseleaf sheets in a 3-ring binder, so that you can organize them however you like -- alphabetically, by type, whatever. Think about it: wouldn't that be the best solution ever?

    BECMI: not D&D?

Probably, since the "Mentzer" Basic and Expert sets were my first D&D products. At the time, AD&D 1e felt a bit like a pseudo-D&D to me.

"Bait Monsters" and the "Trained Mindset"

Never really liked giants, almost never used them... If they're not in the 4e MM, I probably wouldn't even notice if it weren't for online bellyaching. :D

    "Core" and Business Models

I'm fairly certain that the first two volumes of the Monstrous Compendium were intended to be "core." Volume 3 was labeled "Forgotten Realms Appendix" -- although it did include some non-FR monsters. I always saw Vol. 1 & 2 together as the complete product, and at the age of 15 it didn't...

    Find the Anime Challenge

So, does this mean that Elfquest would be a "bad" influence on D&D? (In the BECM D&D GAZ5 The Elves of Alfheim, the three pictured leaders of the Longrunner clan look almost exactly like Cutter, Leetah, and Skywise).

    Find the Anime Challenge

None of the art show here depicts characters that look inspired by anime. If one of these character did look inspired by anime, then 1) His head would be shaped like a little bean. 2) He'd have a tiny mouth when closed, RIDICULOUSLY huge when open. 3) His boots would be a whole lot cooler...

How about "Witch" instead of "Warlock"?

I think that they should rename the Fighter class "Warrior." A Warforged Warrior/Warlord/Warlock would be awesome.

I am not happy with the current list of divine classes

I don't think that each deity should have a different and separate class, as I don't think it really makes that much sense. But the whole D&D clerics and deities thing has become this weird entity unto itself that doesn't really resemble real-world or fictional mythologies -- he whole "utterly...

The 4th edition class list so far

I haven't followed every single news item word by word, but did they say there would be exactly 8 classes -- no more and no less -- in the first PHB? I remember reading something about 8 classes in the PHB when news first started to trickle out, but at the time I think I read it as "at least 8...

    Design and Development: Cosmology

I'm really liking the sounds of this so far. The old "Great Wheel" always seemed ultra dogmatic and rather bland to me. Planescape was certainly not bland, but that was the tone of the setting and had nothing to do with the structure of the outer planes. And it always seemed really dumb to me...

D&D 4E Is 4E the designers homebrew coming to my gaming table?

But it's not the same as that, as there isn't any implied continuity. If your first 4e campaign is not a direct follow-up to your 1e/2e/3e Greyhawk campaign, then there is no handwaving, discarding, glossing over, or any such thing. In the reality of the 4e "default" world, this is the way it...

D&D 4E Is 4E the designers homebrew coming to my gaming table?

The problem with that is that for those players who aren't familiar with the 30-year history of the game don't need to deal with the clutter from previous editions. It's just a bunch of filler to have to sift through to get at the meat of the setting. Veteran gamers should have enough of an...

D&D 4E Is 4E the designers homebrew coming to my gaming table?

"Hardcore" gamers are whiny, selfish dorks who can and will complain about anything and everything that isn't to their exact specifications. :D The thing that a lot of people are overlooking is that what is "historical" or "conventional" D&D "fluff" to them is not necessarily so to other...

    Why so many changes?

If I were given the task of leading the design and development of the next edition of the D&D game, there are plenty of things that I would want to change too. It's the nature of designers and creative folks in general to keep tinkering with things, both to improve them and also to bring their...

D&D 4E Some thoughts on 4e magic from a designer

I love the idea of the most powerful spells of a particular "school" generally being restricted to true "specialists," and I've been wanting that for a long time now. The 1st Edition Illusionist was cool, because she wasn't just a Magic-User with an extra Illusion/Phantasm spell per day and a...

    Player canceling late

I always feel really guilty when I behave like this player, so I don't know that doing things just to "show him" does anything more than rub salt in the wounds. He knows that he make a commitment he couldn't keep, he knows that he should have given you more notice, and he knows that he should...
