D&D General [+] For (hypothetical) 6e: Which arcane caster class should be the "simple" one?

Basically. Every other class uses the "traditional" spellcasting system (in various full, half, and one-third progressions) while one single class breaks the rules. I will refrain from giving my further feelings on pact magic, but I can speak from experience that for less-experienced players...

D&D General [+] For (hypothetical) 6e: Which arcane caster class should be the "simple" one?

My point was that the 3.5 warlock was a very simple arcane "caster" that didn't use spell slots that morphed in 5e into one of the most complex classes to build and level and is absolutely not new player friendly. It would have been nice if there was a simple subclass version of the warlock, but...

D&D General [+] For (hypothetical) 6e: Which arcane caster class should be the "simple" one?

The original 3.5 warlock would be the best way to handle a simple caster. One specific spell/power (Eldritch blast) that you can modify and a few minor magical tricks to provide defense and support abilities. A magical ranged version of the sneak attack rogue. IMHO, 5e messed up that simplicity...

D&D General D&D Evolutions You Like and Dislike [+]

Like: * The general trend towards inclusive play. 2e was often defined by adding as many restrictions and handicaps as possible. The trend has moved towards options and not crippling PCs for playing outside the box. Dislike: * Some loss of unique D&Disms in the process. In the process of...

Dungeons & Dragons Playtests Four New Mystic-Themed Subclasses

Well no, it was. It just didn't explicitly state that. Attrition based games need that sort of design to work. Pitch five PCs against a single encounter and they can go nova on it and rest regardless of edition. I used to play 2e with a DM who loved "single epic battles" and guess what? After a...

Dungeons & Dragons Playtests Four New Mystic-Themed Subclasses

How much different is that from the Against the Giants keeps or Cattle Ravenloft or the Caves of Chaos? There is no time limit, not every room has worthy combat encounters nor are they required to explore every one of them to complete, and players can enter and exit freely to rest between...

It can get in line with the three hundred other b/x clones (with or without ascending AC)

But that's how you get 40 variants of fireball that are the same effect with just different numbers of dice. Is better to have fireblast, fireball, pyroclasm, delayed blast fireball, flame cylinder, comet strike, meteor blast and nuclear winter fireball which only differs in size and dice? I...

D&D General [+] For (hypothetical) 6e: Which arcane caster class should be the "simple" one?

Ar that point, your building the.complexity into the spell itself, which is a different type of complexity. Players already forget to upgrade cantrip damage, so making more spells scale in nonlinear ways based on level would probably not solve the problem either. I'm not saying it's a bad idea...

D&D General [+] For (hypothetical) 6e: Which arcane caster class should be the "simple" one?

That depends. Do you want 6 classes with 15 spells per level or 15 classes with 6 spells per level?

D&D General [+] For (hypothetical) 6e: Which arcane caster class should be the "simple" one?

This is the tension between rules and rulings though. When a spell has a single defined feature and parameters, it acts as a single tool. The problem comes quickly that unless every problem is solved with the few tools you have on hand, people will naturally seek more and more tools. If healing...

D&D General [+] For (hypothetical) 6e: Which arcane caster class should be the "simple" one?

If given a chance to build 6e, Enworld will inevitably build B/X with ascending AC.

D&D General [+] For (hypothetical) 6e: Which arcane caster class should be the "simple" one?

If you really want "simpler" casters, remove the bonus spell lists from all subclasses. Then make almost every classes spell prep change only on level up rather than per day. (Wizard is the sole exception). Once you have everyone only having 2-3 spells per spell level rather than 5+, the amount...

I love making no choices about my character. I don't even think picking a name should be a choice. /S

    D&D 5E (2014) Why doesn't Magic Stone get better?

Yeah, I'm not suggesting it's a good cantrip, just the intent

    D&D 5E (2014) Why doesn't Magic Stone get better?

You need to find a way to get extra attacks then. That's the only way magic stone hangs in 2014.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why doesn't Magic Stone get better?

Its supposed to be ranged shillelagh, which also doesn't scale with level but with # of attacks. In theory, if you can increase the number of attacks you get, it matches the cantrip progression. But unless you are a high-level fighter with Magic Stone as a cantrip, it rarely works out like that.
