Should D&D (or any other RPG) actually attempt to be "All Things to All People"?

No. Just like we don't need one poster taking another poster's comment out of context and inferring malcontent, when such was never intended. By the same token, it would appear you disagree with the statement. Are you saying that combat in 4th Edition isn't good? Because from where I sit, I...

Should D&D (or any other RPG) actually attempt to be "All Things to All People"?

As a single, individual product, I don't think it would be a good idea; too many people want too many different things when they play. I've often said to my friends in discussion, what I would do if I were WotC, which I think solves a great deal many of the problems since 4th Edition was put...

Why is it a bad thing to optimise?

Agreed. Plot, IMO, is the reason behind the PCs traveling to or through the mountainous region. If they're seeking the hermit living at the top of a summit, or looking for the entrance to the dwarven stronghold, those are the plot. A randomly rolled landslide on an encounters table, that is...

    Is D&D an illusion?

The first mistake in this statement is that D&D is not a story crafted by the DM, who coincidentally is not a storyteller, a DM is simply a referee or moderator between the players and the game world. It is not the DMs job to tell a story, it is not the DMs job to make sure the PCs get from...

    Your nerdiness

Gonna guess stayed about the same. Anyone not knowing me personally or meeting me on first impression would probably never think I had a nerdy side, unless I happen to be wearing a nerdy T-shirt at that time. I don't hide it or anything, and definitely wouldn't be ashamed by anyone knowing...

New Mearls Article - Skills in D&D

That is incorrect. It specifically state under the Swimming NWP in the 2E PHB, that "Those without this proficiency cannot swim". AD&D, however, does assume the PCs can swim unless encumbered by armor or against winds of 35mph or greater.

Getting started with an iPad, advice please?

Open iTunes and connect the iPad. After it does it's thing, in the right hand column, left click your iPad (device name). In the right hand pane, it should be on Summary and at the bottom of that pane under OPTIONS, check the box that says "Manually manage music and videos" Then go to the top...

    Checks rolled for the players

Actually, no they really don't. I may call for the party to make a Perception check. They all roll, everyone tells me what they rolled. If no one passes, I just say, "ok" and we continue on with whatever is taking place at the time. I don't expand or elude to anything in particular and this does...

    Checks rolled for the players

Sure, I guess in some instances it could. But, unless the players are actively on the look out for something, randomly asking for a skill check doesn't necessarily give anything away. I've asked my players to give me rolls based off of X Attribute or Skill a number of times, without any...

    Is D&D an illusion?

D&D is a game, a game of illusions. And when you play the Game of Illusions, you either win or you die....there is no middle ground... ....oh, wait no....whoops....sorry, my bad.....that's an entirely different game all together.

Best old style AD&D dungeon crawlers ever

From personal experience, Against the Cult of the Reptile God. I've run this and my players enjoyed it immensely, though there is potential for TPK, as was the case of my group which died to a single room encounter. There is a local town nearby for the PCs to make a home base, there is travel...

Things I learned early in Gaming that still apply to Real Life

The One Ring RPG + My iPad

Thanks guys. @ Steel_Wind - Yeah, no Pages, yet but I plan on getting it soon. I've heard a lot of good things about it.

    Checks rolled for the players

From my PoV, as a DM I would have to say in this particular instance, having them roll would have been OK and I probably would have had them do so; reason being, success or failure in this case would not have been an unknown. If you would have had them make a skill check (whichever skill would...

D&D 5E (2014) cancelled 5e announcement at Gencon??? Anyone know anything about this?

I heard a rumor that WotC has actually already developed, announced and released D&D 5E. It's just that any player who has played and enjoyed any edition prior, has become blinded by nerd rage at some point, and therefore can't see it. :D

Anyone use surveys for new gaming groups?

I tend to agree. Gaming is a hobby, it's something everyone gets together for to escape the day to day hustle. Surveys get the job done, but I think as Kzach said, a better way would be to have a Session 0, in which the players and GM are just getting together to talk about the game and maybe...

    Syfy cancels Eureka

Kinda bummed that the show is getting canned, but looking forward to the wrap up. As others have said, at least we get a wrap up, rather than just cut off. I still find Season One to be my favorite. I enjoyed the show more when each episode was it's own story, rather than a large underlying one...

The One Ring RPG + My iPad

For a while now, I've been trying to find the perfect background image for my iPad. Being a Tolkien fan, I wanted to find something that would reflect that, but full screen images just didn't seem to fit. So, today I was reading over my PDF of TOR and was struck with a pretty good idea. (Let...
