    D&D 5E (2014) Free 60+ page Guide to Sword & Sorcery for 5E D&D

I think you have a good point, and I'm really on the fence myself about this rule. There's even a sentence in the Player's Guide (that you left out when you quoted the rest of the paragraph) that explicitly calls out that this is up for discussion: "GMs should discuss with their players before...

[Online] [5E] [World of Xoth] Seeking players for Throne of Gondira Online play

Play Method: Online using RPG Manager combined with video chat (Google Meet) and a VTT (probably Owlbear Rodeo) Game/System: 5E Player or GM? I'm the GM. Time/Frequency: Bi-weekly, at a time of day/night convenient for the group. Starting late January 2021. Genre: Sword and Sorcery! Current...

Pathfinder 2E Regarding the complexity of Pathfinder 2

My viewpoint is quite far from the vanilla D&D / high fantasy default. I prefer swords & sorcery, where no PCs (and no current NPCs for that matter) are able to create magic items; such items are all leftovers from fallen civilizations. Most items found as treasure tend to be potions or other...

Pathfinder 2E Regarding the complexity of Pathfinder 2

Fine, if you really want the PCs to buy and sell magic items. I personally don't like that. It "takes away the magic from the magic", so to speak. IMHO, magic should be something you find or take, not something you buy from Ye Local Magic Shoppe.

Pathfinder 2E Regarding the complexity of Pathfinder 2

Some thoughts on how I would do this: You need to spend the gold to get the XP (essentially, you are "buying XP"). You can buy XP only with gold/items designated as "treasure" by the GM. (The point of this is to avoid the PCs grabbing every bit of furniture, livestock, used weapons and armor...

Pathfinder 2E Regarding the complexity of Pathfinder 2

Can this be fixed by using old-school "XP for gold" rules? Basically require lots of gold (and training time) to advance to higher levels. It fixes the "there is nothing to spend gold on" problem, and forces some downtime between adventures (avoiding the "my PC is just 17 years old but already...

Tough choice, that sounds like a good thing?

D&D 5E (2014) What is the appeal of the weird fantasy races?

I feel your pain :-) I've always liked the humanocentric, low magic, swords & sorcery (or swords & planet) style better than "everything goes" high fantasy. Check out the Freebies section on my website to see how you can do a human-only campaign using Pathfinder or 5E: xoth.net publishing -...

Pathfinder 2E Regarding the complexity of Pathfinder 2

But isn't the opposite also true; that any monster more than 3-4 levels below the PCs will not be able to threaten the PCs at all? I think I've read that this creates a very narrow band of "appropriate" monsters the PCs can encounter at any given time in their PF2 careers. Whereas 5E's Bounded...

Pathfinder 2E Regarding the complexity of Pathfinder 2

Just curious (and slightly off-topic, so feel free to answer in a separate thread if you'd like). I've noted that you have stated multiple times that combat in PF2 is good, and this is (IIRC) because the monsters have cool and unique abilities. Also, 5E is sometimes criticized because many of...

D&D 5E (2014) What kind of adventure would you like to run/play? (quick poll)

Another status update: "Throne of Gondira" is now available!!! :) A stand-alone 60-page sword and sorcery adventure module for character levels 4-6, written for the Fifth Edition of the world's most popular roleplaying game and usable with any fantasy roleplaying game ruleset or edition. The...

Release [Xoth.Net Publishing] Throne of Gondira, new sword and sorcery adventure module for 5E

You have heard the wild tales of fabled Gondira, a city built by the sons of giants, with a palace of white marble and gates of beaten gold, now hidden by the jungle and haunted by white apes who walk upright like men. Can you penetrate the steaming jungles of the south to discover the lost...

    D&D 5E (2014) Vision, light and ambush

To clarify, what I meant to say was that the party was assumed to be on "default alert" and therefore the default passive Perception checks would be used. I agree that some level of danger can always be assumed in a dungeon (as opposed to, for example, the marketplace in a sleepy village).

    D&D 5E (2014) Vision, light and ambush

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I understand that the rules are somewhat vague on purpose, and depends on DM fiat. Going by the rules as written, and the feedback given, here are my key takeaways: You can't hide in dim light, you must hide in the darkness outside the torchlight (exceptions...

    D&D 5E (2014) Vision, light and ambush

It's a matter of definition, I guess. From the rules on Hiding: "When you try to hide, make a Dexterity (Stealth) check. Until you are discovered or you stop hiding, that check's total is contested by the Wisdom (Perception) check of any creature that actively searches for signs of your...

    D&D 5E (2014) Vision, light and ambush

Looking for clarification on how to handle the following scenario: Party of four adventurers, fighter in the front carrying a torch (bright light in 20 feet radius, dim light in 20 feet radius) Party enters a dark room via an open archway (no door) Party is not actively looking for danger (no...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is the Phase Spider listed under "Miscellaneous Creatures" in the MM?

Sounds plausible. That also explains the Blink Dog! :)

D&D 5E (2014) Why is the Phase Spider listed under "Miscellaneous Creatures" in the MM?

Is it just me, or does it seem kind of strange that the Phase Spider (which is a Monstrosity) is thrown in with all the "normal beasts" in Appendix A in the 5E MM? It even has an illustration and some flavor text, but did not get its own entry in the main part of the book? True, there are a few...

D&D 5E (2014) What kind of adventure would you like to run/play? (quick poll)

Here's a status update: The first of these adventures to see print (and of course PDF) will be the jungle city; the book is titled "Throne of Gondira" and will be suitable for 4th to 6th-level characters. It includes wilderness exploration, social encounters, as well as plenty of dark dungeons...
