[WIR] The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Gundabad can be identified with a real-world location, Triglav in Slovenia, the highest peak of the Julian Alps which are a range of the Alps, so I would say it's in the Misty Mountains which I would identify with the Alps. I would identify Ered Mithrin, the Grey Mountains, with the Dinaric Alps...

D&D General Your Core Classes if The Core 4 Aren't Allowed

I was thinking Poul Anderson trolls, but more like those in The Broken Sword and less like those in Three Hearts and Three Lions. Also, the fairies are not Small unless you choose that size. The default is Medium, so you could play a fairy knight or whatever.

Here's an alternative list for me: Classes: Assassin Druid Monk Paladin Races (Since the four Free Peoples of the Fellowship are off limits, I decided to go for an un-Tolkienesque lineup. The trolls are not Tolkien trolls.): Fairies Gnomes Kobolds Pixies Sprites Trolls

    IN REMEMBRANCE--2025

Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent youth activist and leader in last year’s uprising in Bangladesh, died of his wounds Thursday at a hospital in Singapore after he was shot in the head by masked assailants.

My copy of Introduction to Attic Greek, Donald J. Mastronarde (1993), defines νόμος as "custom, law", so the meaning of the conjectured and unattested compound word γηνόμος could be something like "earth/land-custom" or perhaps "one who follows (enforces?, embodies?) the custom of the...

D&D General Christmas elves in dnd?

The point of referencing The Father Christmas Letters, which seems to have been missed, is that Christmas elves are not a folkloric tradition. They are a literary invention of the mid-19th century and a product of the decisions of authors and artists who have since chosen to make a subject of...

D&D General Christmas elves in dnd?

This thread is in the D&D General forum asking how one would render Christmas elves in the "various edition styles". The early, so-called "old school" editions are just as relevant to that question today as more recent editions.

D&D General Christmas elves in dnd?

The possible derivation of the term gnome (Latin gnomus, gnomos) from a proposed Latin gēnomos, itself representing a Greek *γηνόμος, for which this Wikipedia article gives a literal translation of "earth dweller", is entirely conjectural and not substantiated by any known prior attestation in...

[WIR] The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

To add to what I posted above, there's Sam's description of the event: He heard Frodo's voice, but it seemed to come from a great distance, or from under the earth, crying out strange words. This can be read as a description of Frodo's voice coming across from the wraith-world, but it also...

[WIR] The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

I think he was remembering the song Gildor's company had been singing when he met them, which had driven away the Black Riders. Eta: Reading the passage again, particularly "he heard himself crying aloud", it seems like an instance of divine providence working through him, as if the words have...

D&D General Christmas elves in dnd?

I don't want to debate the semantics of the term gnome. What I consider its misappropriation, to refer to household spirits, bothers me, but that ship sailed last century. Such usage is now quite popular, garden gnomes and the English title of the 1976 book Gnomes being prime examples. The...

Gnome was coined by Paracelsus in the 16th century. It refers to the Bergmännlein or "mountain manikin", a class of beings believed to lurk in the mines in early modern Germany. It was in the 20th century that gnome lost its strict association with earth and became largely synonymous with...

D&D General Christmas elves in dnd?

The description of Santa Claus as "a right jolly old elf" is misguided and similar to the name Gandalf being applied to the maia Olórin; he is apparently long-lived, magical, and associates with elves, therefore people think he's an elf, but he's not. In both cases, the beard is a dead giveaway...
