D&D General What Happens if a Cleric/Warlock/etc PC Gravely Offends Their Supernatural Patron?

I think most people generally think the wizard is the most "powerful" caster class, correct? Because they don't have any roleplaying restrictions on their actions, so it seems weird to me that clerics/warlocks need some sort of DM fiat to take away their powers for balance is an argument. As...

D&D General What Happens if a Cleric/Warlock/etc PC Gravely Offends Their Supernatural Patron?

I'm not sure I agree that Clerics and Warlocks are the top of the heap power wise, to warrant a "balancing mechanism". Paladins maybe. (Mostly joking on that last part). And that is assuming that roleplaying restrictions can balance mechanical advantages, which is a whole other conversation.

D&D General What Happens if a Cleric/Warlock/etc PC Gravely Offends Their Supernatural Patron?

If the warlock class can't handle fantasy Ghost Rider, then it's not terribly great. For the most part, in my games, I assume a character's power was granted to the character and is not easily taken away. Besides being more fun in general, it also explains why deities, demons and archfey don't...

D&D General Chris just said why I hate wizard/fighter dynamic

One option that I haven't seen suggested (unless I've missed it, which in as large a discussion as this one is entirely possible!) is the use of optional/substitution abilities. People who dislike the new/upgraded/over the top abilities could ignore them and use the classes as per the PHB, while...

D&D General Poll: How tough should 20th Level Fighters be? (MCU edition)

I voted somewhere in the Gap, as that is probably the minimum a fighter should be at 20th level, just based on what 20th level characters are fighting. The Tarrasque is something that a group could theoretically fight, and the fighter is expected to go up and try to hurt it with a sword. I'm not...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Quest to Reduce "Sameyness" (+)

I think the problem with the monk is that fighting unarmed is not a terribly great niche anyway. Even in a universe where an unarmed fighting style never got made, the Monk is a class that basically uses class features to replicate a generally less damaging attack and lower ac than a fighter...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Quest to Reduce "Sameyness" (+)

How specific is a niche though? Lockpicking as the example, was once a "niche" of the Thief class. Well, except for the Knock spell. But what about, say, the fighter? The closest thing I can think was ever a niche for them was getting weapon mastery, which is really specific. In contrast...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Quest to Reduce "Sameyness" (+)

So, mechanics then. I suspected so, based on the initial post, but figured I would try to clarify for my own sake. The idea of changing saving throws doesn't really do anything for me personally in sameyness, but as you said, it's a side note. It doesn't really change much anyway, besides...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Quest to Reduce "Sameyness" (+)

Thoughts on reducing sameness.... I guess the first question I would have is what qualifies sameness? Is it a diversity of mechanics, a sort of identity tied to each class or a distinctive feel in play for each class? Or is a combination of these things, or, perhaps, something I am completely...

D&D 5E (2014) Split the Assassin from the Rogue back into its own class

I think it is difficult to come up with a separate class for Assassin that doesn't feel like it's mostly a riff off the rogue. So, while the assassin subclass could definitely use some tweaking, I'm not sure trying to make an entire class around the concept will work out well.

    Why Not Magic?

This thread has moved quickly. Anyway, after some clarification, I think it is perfectly fine to have a setting where the assumption is that everyone will have some level of magic. If the mechanics have a flaw system of some sort, you could have a non-magic/magic adverse flaw, like some systems...

    Why Not Magic?

That is a good question, but the answer is a bit more difficult, and it depends on if you are asking for an in universe explanation or not. In universe it is entirely possible that everyone would learn some magic, assuming the setting works like that. But there is a lot of variables there. Does...

D&D General What is your favorite Class?

Fighter in theory. Sometimes the mechanics are a bit of a let down, but yah, the warrior type is my favorite archetype. Rogues would be a close second.

D&D 5E (2014) Why are non-caster Ranger themes so popular?

Those same people don't endorse giving spells to every single class, so ultimately they and WotC will have to find a middle ground. The ranger can keep it's spells in my opinion for what it is worth, but saying it is impossible to make a non-magical ranger is basically saying you can never make...

D&D 5E (2014) Why are non-caster Ranger themes so popular?

Is that a problem with the concept though? The execution of Hide in Plain Sight is lackluster sure, but if your argument is that non-spellcasting abilities cannot inherently be interesting or useful, than there is a bigger problem than just a non-spellcasting ranger since we have 4 other core...

D&D General I'm reading the Forgotten Realms Novels- #202 The Howling Delve by Jaleigh Johnson (Dungeons 2)

I was waiting for this one, as The City of Ravens was one of the Forgotten Realms novels I really enjoyed awhile back. I think your assessment is pretty fair though. What it really does well, like you said, is make sure you're never bored. Something is always happening, and even after Jack gets...

D&D General Martial/Caster balance and the Grease spell

If you are standing in the Grease you make the save to fall down when you end your turn, so you won't be able to stand up until your next turn. You can potentially get up when you enter the area of Grease and fall.

D&D General Martial/Caster balance and the Grease spell

We will have to agree to disagree on that. I don't think I'd use one of my more powerful slots for such an effect, especially when I could use it for something like Hold Monster, Wall of Force, Telekinesis or even Cone of Cold. Maybe, at really high levels, I might be willing to drop a 5th level...

D&D General Martial/Caster balance and the Grease spell

It's been awhile since that game, but I believe the set up was Grease, Barbarian in front, and cleric immediately behind with spiritual guardians. Which meant the grease and guardians overlapped, which made movement in there pretty difficult. Entering causes save vs prone, get up with half...

D&D General Martial/Caster balance and the Grease spell

We got some use out of it in Curse of Strahd. We used it to create a chokepoint in a werewolf den with a cleric using Spiritual Guardians, and the barbarian blocking the way out of the grease.
