I don't really mind new species, obviously. I just think they should be tailored to their worlds and have the settings built with them in mind. Rather than being all "Well. Everything in all these books now exists in every setting, forever." I also hate the "All tieflings look like this, now...

Or they could've not made Dragonborn core to FR and instead kept them on the fringes. Or they could've revealed some effort by various dragons to imbue their power into mortals. Or they could've introduced a hidden enclave of Dragonborn. Or made the Spellplague turn people into dragonborn. Or...

It's 5e based, so similar benefits and penalties to other core races. Humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, and goblins will probably be pretty much the same. For Giantkin I'm planning on doing a Goliath style thing for them, powerful build and all. Harpies will get a fly speed of 40 but be unable to...

'Cause I don't want dragonborn in the setting. I don't like them and don't want them to take up a big "Front and Center" identity slot. Which is, ultimately, what 4e did and got carried into 5e. Meanwhile, Harpies and Dragons both share a position within most narratives of being broadly...

But I don't wanna do -any- animal people at all. I'm just acknowledging that furry/scaley is where a lot of folks are headed. So I'm making a space for them and their harengons and tortles and stuff without reprinting 2 dozen different animal heritages as 'core' to the setting.

So. Species for a setting. My thoughts on a list are: 1) Humans. Gotta have 'em. 2) Elves. With massive species variety. We're talking "Two elves walk into a bar and now there's a bar elf species" 2a) Eyre Elves. High elves. They live in the mountain ranges and have marvelous fairy tale...

I'd rather WotC be a privately owned business rather than one arm of a massively publicly traded company. It'd still be the 800lbs gorilla in the room, but it'd be a hell of a lot friendlier and innovative.

I'm considering just throwing up a Patreon to see who might support the project along the way. Do weekly design updates, polls for material people want to see, things like that. Maybe even do raffles for one person a month to just tell me what they want and have me make it for them, specifically.

Definitely gonna have to rearrange a few abilities... Put Ritual Casting down a level, put Swordmage Aegis up a level. Put Grand Arcana in at 6th level...

We'll have to see where it goes, but I definitely haven't thrown away any of the material I wrote for a prospective Occult Omens.

You ever do something you know you could be paid for while specifically not getting paid for it? Me, too, sometimes... Each of these is a thumbnail you can open up to see what's going on under the hood.

No. It doesn't. This is your strawman to push over. But it isn't the position I've made clear, repeatedly, throughout this thread. The entire idea rests on the premise that there is a fundamental flaw in the way the game was designed which resulted in an unexpected playstyle becoming dominant...

I'm going off a similar gut level and, as shown in the CR 17 dragon encounter, it looks like it lines up with expectations -fairly- well... Ah, yeah. The X is 1d8. So average of 4.5. Of course not every roll will use d8s, and there's also weapon variation to consider (Rogues with Daggers or...

Also: Running away is not actually an option, in this scenario. Even assuming the players disengage and dash every chance they get, unless one of the party members is a Rogue, they're all getting clubbed. And if one of them -is- a Rogue, he can get bouldered instead. That is without even...

It's a thing, yeah. After level 5 you get two Actions per turn. One of which can be a Daily or Encounter. The other of which can be an At-Will, such as Disengage, a Weapon Attack, Grappling, Etc. Which skews these up to: Floor at level 1: 2x+2x+1x+1x = 6x Floor at level 5: 3x+3x+2x+2x = 10x...

That's not true, though... 4e dropped in 2008 after the preview in 2007. Pathfinder dropped in 2009. Paizo saw 4e coming, knew the GSL was going to be awful, and started building a bridge in 2007 that wouldn't be finished 'til 2009. But -what- a bridge! Kind of... WotC knew people wouldn't...
