    D&D 5E (2024) UA 8 Barbarian Discussion

Do you really expect people to be doing the golf-bag thing? And constantly swap in game? Because that's not how I've seen things work so far. YMMV, and its all anacdotal, but I don't see that happening, so to me that's a false statement. Not to mention, its not really a choice if you do...

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

Because its evidence that the hand crossbow is an oversight rather than intention and will likely be changed. Its all about enforcing a class role and a class fantasy, really. Otherwise, why bother with any restrictions on weapons at all?

    D&D 5E (2024) UA 8 Barbarian Discussion

I don't care. I could bring up a ton of reasons why this justification isn't good, but frankly, I shouldn't need to. This isn't about a power budget, this is about creating a fun play experience, and waiting til most games are ending to get something that creates a fun play experience but...

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

Grappling has an odd limitation on a Monk. You can grab someone, but you can't carry them anywhere, as Monks tend to have low Strength, and thus carrying capacity. I'm worried that there's a lot of other hidden qualities in Monk that make it nice in a white room, but less shiny in actual play.

Because, if they wanted ranged monk weapons, they would have kept Simple Ranged Weapons instead of specifying Simple Melee. It seems like its straight jacketing Monk into melee type, no ranged.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

Maybe. I ran the numbers and its about ~2.7 extra damage (1d8, avg 4.5, 60% hit chance) on average at level 5, with a trade off in lower AC. Also with the possibility of lower DEX score, which would actually lower your damage from the lower to-hit and extra +1 damage on a hit from four attacks.

Ah, I see. Yes, that's an odd issue.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

Good direction for the Monk, but... I'm still worried. They don't have any exploration features or skill bumps, when all the other martials are getting some. Even Barbarian and Fighter do. Lots of new tricks, but without using BA for attacks, we're looking at the worst damage from a...

Shortbow is a simple weapon, so Monks already get that too.

Loving Barbarian. I just wish Brutal Strikes were at the same levels Rogue got Cunning Strike.

D&D 5E (2024) New Unearthed Arcana Playtest Includes Barbarian, Druid, and Monk

Well, here's my takes Barbarian continues to look awesome. The fixes to Rage are brilliant, Brutal Strikes are good, I'm liking everything. The only thing I would do is move Brutal Strikes down to 5, then the other two shuffled down to fill in the blanks. Druid... made me sad. They're...

D&D 5E (2024) Gold & Other Treasure (Can we get off the treadmill?)

That's the thing. I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO LOOK BEYOND WOTC FOR THAT. Its their job to provide tools for storytelling. I'm paying THEM real money to do it. That's not only a cop out, its also giving DMs more homework to do, which is not good.

D&D 5E (2024) Gold & Other Treasure (Can we get off the treadmill?)

The opposite is "WotC creating opportunities for gold spending in the core books" as opposed to "tables having to figure this out themselves." Not "the players figured out their own gold sinks" because, fundamentally, the DM is responsible for how the world responds to players; the two are...

D&D 5E (2024) Gold & Other Treasure (Can we get off the treadmill?)

In other words... "Look at all the stuff my DM homebrewed for us." Or effectively throwing it in the trash. Yes, the problem is solvable, but DMs shouldn't have to be the ones to make things up.

D&D 5E (2024) Gold & Other Treasure (Can we get off the treadmill?)

I'm not sure I would say that I would say the lack of prices is the biggest failure. Though it is quite annoying, I'd have to point to other issues myself as the worst. Personally I always found the insistence that you need to be a spellcaster to make magic weapons to be the greater failing...

D&D 5E (2024) Gold & Other Treasure (Can we get off the treadmill?)

I once was part of a 3e game where we just... spent a couple of game days just building a town for survivors we met. Not exactly downtime, since we kinda paused our adventure in the middle off a fforest to do this. We worked out logistics, ffood supply, defenses, everything we could think of...

Where you getting this idea from? I thought it was part of the skill system, so I'd like to hear why you think its not. Please and thank you.

    D&D 5E (2024) Tweaking Bastion levels for a 3-12 campaign

So. After BG3 made solid arguments for running a game til level 12, I've been working on adapting my next game for the same level stretch. One thing is that, if we use Bastions, I don't see any reason to not squish level requirements. I'm thinking of going with 3, 6, 9, 12 instead of 5, 9...
