OSR Why does OSR Design Draw You In?

Speaking for me here. Although sandbox style can be ran in 5e, it's a lot more work on the DM since the core books lack the world building tools and built in exploration mechanics that other OSR games have. Also, creating monsters/items/NPCs/etc... on the fly is more involved and harder to...

Excellent video I stumbled upon on the subject:

TSR On the Relative Merits of the TSR Editions

AD&D 1e for me. Has all the races, classes, spells, and magic items that feel "core" to me; buffs PCs to make the dungeons more survivable by adding more HP and more lenient death mechanics; and better guidance on how the game should be run and the role of a Dungeon Master. Although I dislike...

OSR Why does OSR Design Draw You In?

Oh neat, that's different for sure. Has she played Draw Steel yet?

    D&D Pinball Machine

I remember reading about how this D&D pinball machine saves your progress via phone app. Such a neat idea.

    D&D Pinball Machine

Google "Bar Aracades"! I've been finding at least one in every major city I've been too. If you happen to be in Vegas though and want access to 368 different machines, drop by the Pinball Museum!

OSR Why does OSR Design Draw You In?

Haha, this was my first guess since I'm in the same boat. Luckily, I have a very patient wife who will play cooperatively with me time to time when I can't get a normal group together. Agree here too. I shower the players with XP when I'm running OSR games, especially the lower levels. My...

OSR Why does OSR Design Draw You In?

This is what I observed with 2e as well. Looking back, I can't help but think the playerbase wanted campaigns to be ran in such a way the rules just didn't support. Rather than actually create a ruleset to support it, it was just easier to downplay the importance of rules and dice results. What...

OSR Why does OSR Design Draw You In?

Because the mechanics are written in favor of the dangerous world and not the players. I also enjoy the amount of freedom it gives the players/DM to be inventive during play. Because of both of these reasons, I find it encourages more creative problem solving. My first game was Hackmaster (4e)...

Oh, The Dark Eye! Didn't recognize the German name right away. How much in common does this have with the 2015 version I own?

Haha, I thought the same thing. Also, it kind of unintentionally gave me the impression that maybe satanic stuff was cool since I apparently liked it so much. No wonder I was a young metal head obsessed with Doom. 🤘

Always wanted D&D 2e, but wasn't allowed, so parents compromised and got these for me on Christmas (4th grader at the time). Played Rifts the most, but enjoyed the occasional GURPS game. Traveler was too difficult for me to understand unfortunately, and my parents had zero interest in helping me...

I wasn't allowed to own anything D&D growing up (Satanic Panic and all that), but was able to cobble together my own game using video game manuals/guides. A mix of Eye of the Beholder and Dragon Warrior (NES). Lots of fun games during lunch recess!

What were your thoughts as you began reading through it for the first time? Also, about what age? For me, at around 10, I remember being amazed at how useful numbers could be!

Keeping Track of Time (In Game)

In practice, the day ends when the spell casters say it ends. Okay, sometimes it's the fighters if they're beat up badly enough... 😄 Really though, thanks to players counting the days for me, I haven't really needed to track time until I started playing Shadowdark (which is just real-time), so...
