D&D 5E (2014) Are we at, or close, to peak D&D? Again?

We played Pathfinder over Zoom without much trouble, but we don't use mats or miniatures anyway. Also played D&D 5th edition using Roll 20, until we were able to go back to playing in person. The people who were new to the game found Roll 20 easier in some respects e.g. making ability checks.

Paizo Any good High Level Adventure Paths, starting at lvl 10?

If you have access to Dungeon magazine you could run the Savage Tide AP, either starting with Here There Be Monsters from Dungeon 142 when the party gets shipwrecked (it is for levels 7-8 but it would be fairly easy to beef up the encounters; the party having access to teleport might enable them...

D&D 5E (2014) Dealing with optimizers at the table

There's lots of good advice on this thread. Since I can't add to it, I'm going to offer some less-good suggestions instead. Work out what level of creatures the non-optimisers can reliably one-shot, and only have encounters with those. Everybody gets to plough through the monsters and the...

Paizo Any good High Level Adventure Paths, starting at lvl 10?

Slumbering Tsar is awesome, and being too high level for the start isn't really a problem, as the adventure is brutal.

Paizo Any good High Level Adventure Paths, starting at lvl 10?

I really disliked that module when I read it. Seemed to be based on the aftermath of a Forgotten Realms novel or something, and assumed the DM would know all sorts of things before heading off for the Dragon's Den that I really didn't - including that some NPC wizard had killed the dragon...

Paizo Any good High Level Adventure Paths, starting at lvl 10?

I think you could probably run the second half of Rise of the Runelords without needing to play through the first half. If the PCs don't care much about Sandpoint, it should be easy enough to have an army of stone giants threaten somewhere they do care about. Parts 4 and 5 of Curse of the...

What are you running right now?

I'm running a homebrew Pathfinder campaign, and playing in two Pathfinder campaigns, one homebrew and the other one Ruins of Azlant (just finished book 5). These are over Zoom as we have gone back into lockdown, but will go back to face to face to face once lockdown is over (hopefully in a few...

    D&D 5E (2014) Players railroading dungeonmasters

I've never had a player submit a written backstory in 30 years of GMing. As a player, I'll submit one if asked, but I prefer to let the details emerge in play. It irritates me if GMs start adding to my backstory, so I prefer not to give them the opportunity.

D&D 5E (2014) WotC to increase releases per year?

I have been led to believe that calling (say) a Texan by that term might have negative consequences, but I don't have any first hand experience of it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Storm King's Thunder is someone's Demonweb Pits

Maybe you are misunderstanding me, or I'm misunderstanding you. I'm not complaining about grappling. If a monster wants to grapple someone in Pathfinder, you are going to need its CMB. A 3.5 stat block won't give it to you so if you are running a 3.5 adventure in Pathfinder you'll have to work...

    D&D 5E (2014) Storm King's Thunder is someone's Demonweb Pits

I've played through it once, and run it once. It worked really well as a starter adventure, from either side of the screen. I also like Bruce Cordell's 2nd edition adventures, although the only one I've actually run is Shattered Circle (converted to Pathfinder). EDIT yet 4th Marauders of the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Storm King's Thunder is someone's Demonweb Pits

Unless you ran the single volume anniversary edition of Rise of the Runelords? That version was for Pathfinder; the original 6 book version is 3.5. How did grappling work? Did you read the CMB off the Pathfinder stat blocks, or did you ask everyone to amuse themselves for five minutes while you...

Pathfinder 2E What's the deal with 3rd party PF2E Adventure "support"??

I wish there was more scope for putting the serial numbers back on, in some cases. In particular, if 3rd party adventures could have a "where in Golarion" sidebar. "In Golarion, the default is that this adventure is set on the border between Cheliax and Andoran, but if you wanted more of a "hot...

Pathfinder 2E What's the deal with 3rd party PF2E Adventure "support"??

That's very interesting. I always like finding out about the nuts and bolts of RPG publishing. I suppose it is inevitable that DriveThru would pay more attention to selling (3rd party) PDFs than Paizo, since it is their entire business rather than a peripheral service. Also, the Paizo...

D&D 5E (2014) WotC to increase releases per year?

WotC would be out of business in six months if they listened to me. If I was in charge, I'd open up every single setting of theirs on DMs Guild, and invite anyone interested to apply to write the "official setting document" in return for zero dollars but maximum bragging rights. After that...

Pathfinder 2E What's the deal with 3rd party PF2E Adventure "support"??

That's a good point. Also, Paizo staff are very invested in their setting. They probably don't want other people messing around with it (and perhaps coming up with products like "Puppy-Kickers of Golarion" which would taint their brand even if they pulled the license as soon as they found out...

D&D 5E (2014) WotC to increase releases per year?

I'm not really in their target market, since I mostly play other systems, but I do buy the occasional 5th edition book when the subject interests me. So, from my point of view, the more books they bring out the more chance there'll be one I like the sound of. If I had been playing D&D regularly...

Is The One Ring 2E Kickstarter going to break the records?

I'm sure you wouldn't have any trouble selling on the starter set if you don't want it. The starter set is the part I'm most interested in; I'd be very happy to back the kickstarter at "physical starter set plus rules in PDF" level, except of course there isn't one (quite understandably).

D&D General Outside of Welcome to Mystara and Ravenloft Travel Agent what non-Realms lore channels are there?

That makes me feel very old ... I'm more surprised when the stuff I like is on youtube than when it isn't. (Not that it ever occurs to me to look for it!)

Books everyone seems to love, but you just can't

I've long since got rid of the rest of my David Eddings books, but I still have the Elenium and re-read it from time to time.
