    Don't underestimate the Bard

So I have a 9th level party, with 7 players. A fighter/barb, a wizard, a spirit shaman, a ranger, a monk, a rogue, and one bard. The bard's fighting song, with feats from Eberron, gives the party +3 attack/+3 damage. So assuming all hits: Fighter/Barb: 3 attacks +9 damage Ranger: 4 attacks...

    MIC-Balancing by times per day

In general, the resource management part of DnD is thrown out for my game, considering I have relatively few encounters per day of in-game time. Merric's suggestion is a good one. I can throw more deadly challenges at them, since they will be at full resources during most fights.

Yeah, definitely something to keep an eye out for.

    MIC-Balancing by times per day

So I was reading the many many items in the Magic Item Compendium and I noticed that the vast majority of them are balanced via uses per day. Some of the items are extremely powerful for a low cost due to this. But does charges/uses per day really balance anything? For my own game, we see...

I like roleplaying, but too much makes my characters chaotic and wanting to kill things.

    [D&D] Confusion about Levels

If I think about it too much, my head hurts. I just make sure the npcs they fight are challenging enough for the session. Anything beyond that is a headache. :)

    Ridiculous amount of buffs

I did this after I got tired of that tactic. One of the characters managed to get paralyzed while the assassins killed his cohort and threw his heart to the dogs in the street. Hilarity ensued as the other PCs arrived and chased the dogs to save the heart for Raise Dead. Or later when mundane...

    Ridiculous amount of buffs

I shouldn't have included that example, I did do a lot of these things (assassins attacking thier homebase, folks prepping for them, etc) to combat that particular tactic. My main point was do you think there should be limits on buffs in dnd? At what point do they become ridiculous? Do they...

    Ridiculous amount of buffs

Well, the problem with dispel magic against buffs is that its a big waste of time. If my npcs are always going to use dispel magic in a fight, then why not just save time and get rid of the buffs to begin with? When you start dispelling them, it really becomes a nightmare. You and the...

    Ridiculous amount of buffs

With apologies to Ashockney At what point does buffing become ridiculous? What would be the effect of limiting it? Does the higher level game assume that all pcs will be this buffed? When I ran RttToEE, I got sick of this particular tactic by the pcs: Wake up at 10am, buff to the gills...

Single Use Items as Swift Actions

On a personal forum with my players, one of them posted this I like this idea...too many times Ive seen potions/scrolls wasted in a fight, or even worse, a player slaughtered when trying to use one. But how to balance it? The only thing i can think of is timers, like in World of Warcraft...

    Party Magic Pool

Great replies, lots of ideas in here I could use. I like the lowering the value idea should they try to sell it. (The griffon example has become moot because the Drow Bard in the party believes that all Drow adventurers must have a Figurine of Wonderous Power...not sure where he got that...

    Party Magic Pool

Removing the economy or lowering the sale value of the items is probably the best method for achieving what I want from items. The point is that I want to be able to give them different items, sometimes useful, sometimes just quirky, outside of the normal gear that PCs expect. They get...

Exactly...the pcs keep track of the values.

    Party Magic Pool

This is what I tried to do with the griffon, to give them an item with specific uses and instead of them evaluating the item on its use, they evaluated on its GP value and proceeded to discuss selling it. Its my observation that items that don't specifically boost a pc's power are going to be...
