D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

From the Undisputed Truth. :);) Smiling faces sometimes Pretend to be your friend Smiling faces show no traces Of the evil that lurks within (can you dig it?) Smiling faces, smiling faces, sometimes They don't tell the truth Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I got proof

D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

Yes, if the monster understood your language, which I pretty sure was a requirement.

The only thing that bothers me about this illustration is the smiling beholder. It is just So wrong. But I guess it's a trend now - Minecraft recently added friendly ghast.

My question still applies if they talked their way through most encounters.

D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

A serious question - For those of you who indicated that you talked your way through every single encounter in 1E - exactly how did you do it? Did your DM handwave languages? Did the DM just assume every monster and his uncle spoke Common? Did you ensure that at least a few PC's had Comprehend...

D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

Oh, I'm sure it happened at some tables, but it wasn't the norm in any of the groups I was in.

D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

I was a 1E player... The default position was to fight the monster (or run if it was too powerful). Talking was almost never an option.

Was Gygax even born then? :)

D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

Like I said, IMO. However, it's hard to deny that there are more distractions than there were 50 years ago.

And the problem today, is that the teenagers like pastel colors (and want to talk with the monsters, instead of kill them). ;)

D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

Well maybe, but IMO, 1E players are/were a more loyal/consistent group than 5E 2024 players will be (in hindsight)

D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

One difference between "back then" and now, is that there are more distractions. What this means is that WoTC will have to work harder to either maintain the interest of the majority of current players (the BG3/Stranger Things/Critical Roll generation ), or reinvent itself from time to time to...

Which are you, The plan everything out GM, or the Ad lib?

I plan as much as I can with the expectation that my players will think of things that I didn't...resulting in the necessity to ad lib in parts of the session.

D&D General What version of D&D are you playing?

ENWorld may only represent a tiny percent of D&D players, but it tends to be a "hard core" group of players. So the fact that only 45% are playing 2024 should be very telling. And if I read the defensive tone of your response correctly, just remember that WoTC is a business, they are not your...

D&D General What version of D&D are you playing?

As of today, only 45% are playing 5E2024. Interesting.

D&D General I asked AI: "What's the Most Common Cause of Character Death?"

PC's almost never experience permadeath in D&D, so it's a moot point.

D&D General Charisma Checks gone Horribly Wrong - Can you Relate?

As long as you keep in mind that CHA isn't magic, and could never compel someone to do something they don't want to do, I have no problem with CHA checks...and I don't need RP for every attempt.

How long before VTTs support TTRPGs with AI GMs?

Without links or support, everything you state is an opinion. I use Copilot a lot. It once told me that 2+2=5 (no, I'm not kidding) When I brought the error to to it's attention, it told me that most AI's aren't equipped to check basic math. How good of a GM could an AI be with a game that has...
