Like everything else, it varies by group, but I believe the intended playstyle was avoidance when possible. Getting the treasure/xp without getting killed was optimal by my reading.

So like talking to the monsters to avoid fighting them was part of that? Which means that the "talking to monsters instead of killing them" is a part of OS play and not something teens invented yesterday?

Yup. That's what the reaction roll is for. Social stuff with potential foes is definitely part of it.

Oh, I'm sure it happened at some tables, but it wasn't the norm in any of the groups I was in.

Unsurprisingly, I hate marketing. But, what are you going to do? Not look at anything?

One of the last groups I DMed for was composed 50% or so of people in the LGBTQ community.
