Like everything else, it varies by group, but I believe the intended playstyle was avoidance when possible. Getting the treasure/xp without getting killed was optimal by my reading.
So like talking to the monsters to avoid fighting them was part of that? Which means that the "talking to monsters instead of killing them" is a part of OS play and not something teens invented yesterday?

Just being clear on that.
 

Silverleaf steps forward with both hands empty in a token of friendship, and says "Greetings, noble dwellers of deep caverns; can we help you?". Just in case, Silverleaf is thinking of the words he must chant to cast his (Sleep) spell.

Yup. That's what the reaction roll is for. Social stuff with potential foes is definitely part of it.
