Yeah it occurred to me afterwards that I'd basically redescribed story before, story now, and story after, albeit my version of story before includes excessive stake setting/writers room type play as well as pre-scripting per se - sort of 'story just before' and 'story way before'.

A thought occurs to me. If we play out a series of imaginary events, and recounting those events after the fact constitutes telling a story, doesn't that mean that our play created that story?

To be fair I have never actually seen, or even heard of, any of the films you listed :)

Does the telling of it have to be to someone else? Does quietly remembering it afterwards make it a story?

Yep. It's wilful misinterpretation. It's completely unsupported by the text. One might as well punch the other players and say 'what? it says here I'm a fighter'.
