    Comic Book General Thread

Massive fan of a lot of Marvel stuff up to about 1990/91, in particular Claremont X-Men, Miller/Nocenti Daredevil, Simonson Thor, Stern/Michelinie/DeMatteis Spiderman, Secret Wars, Larry Hama GI Joe. Some DC stuff too, mainly Miller, Moore, and Ostrander Suicide Squad. Also Pat Mills Slaine...

Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

How is this any different from any other skill system? 'Oh I'm being charming but I also used a little white lie, is it Persuasion or Deception?'

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

Yeah it occurred to me afterwards that I'd basically redescribed story before, story now, and story after, albeit my version of story before includes excessive stake setting/writers room type play as well as pre-scripting per se - sort of 'story just before' and 'story way before'.

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

What's the difference between 'I am a football player running up the pitch while someone else has the ball' and 'I am a D&D player making small talk in character while someone else is talking to the important NPC'? Edit: what rules of football apply to me when I'm running up the pitch nowhere...

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

If I'm playing football and then the ball goes off the pitch, have I stopped playing football? If I'm playing football, but I don't have the ball and I am simply running up the field, am I really playing football?

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

It seems to me that there may be a profitable distinction to be made between: 1. We are creating story with planned direction - 'OK in the next scene Bob can meet his nemesis and then win after a close fight, but at the cost of his friendship to Jade and he gets a scar that reminds him of his...

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

A thought occurs to me. If we play out a series of imaginary events, and recounting those events after the fact constitutes telling a story, doesn't that mean that our play created that story?

Does the telling of it have to be to someone else? Does quietly remembering it afterwards make it a story?

Yep. It's wilful misinterpretation. It's completely unsupported by the text. One might as well punch the other players and say 'what? it says here I'm a fighter'.
