Tell me about the RPG section of your local game store

The one I go to, Wizard's Keep, has 20-30 feet of shelving that is all new and used RPGs mixed in together. Range seems pretty good as I notice lots of game lines in there. Still, when I'm there, I'm usually looking for older D&D stuff but go there because they have so much used games hoping...

    Painting minis?

I use various model paints. Craft acrylics will work but aren't the best. I do go to the art store to buy big bottles of my black and white. You usually don't want pure white, but rather an off white. After you paint, look into doing a dark wash and dry brushing. Simple techniques that are...

    D&D 5E (2024) Preferences in a New Official 5.5e Specific Setting

Well, all D&D settings already are a mash up of Epic, Heroic, and Sword and Sorcery to begin with because these are the what all got mashed together to make D&D. Some settings have some bent hammered into them like Dragonlance or Birthright, but those have never been main settings. This was not...

    D&D 5E (2024) Preferences in a New Official 5.5e Specific Setting

Well, I don't think that was quite explained in the original descriptions of the setting types. With those you seemed much more hung up on alignment than power level. Even now, I would think the above definition is pretty much void. Sword and Sorcery was offered as an option for a D&D campaign...

D&D General A Rant: DMing is not hard.

Like Honk! Fest or school type marching band competitions? I will say that driving a semi will probably teach you what not to do while driving a car near semis through lessons of white knuckle fear pretty quickly, and make you a better car driver if you value your life. I've listened to friend...

A Steampunk Request for Suggestions Thread

Going to toss out Unhallowed Metropolis out there since I had things to do with it. A dark future world holding on after a zombie apocalypse filled with monsters and mad science. Not really supposed to be a Victorian society, but a society that is LARPing one in a desperate attempt to make sense...

D&D General A Rant: DMing is not hard.

Yep. I ran across a PvP backstab that was obviously due to player misconceptions about relations, not really characters. It was a VtM Sabbat game and a one-shot, so not too big a deal. However, I didn't want that to happen in an ongoing game, so for VtM I started chronicles with asking if the...

D&D General A Rant: DMing is not hard.

I agree with those that have said that DMing is much like any other hobby and some people find it easy and some don't to some degree and that it takes learning to be really good. I look back and thank my friend James for putting up with me in one summer campaign where I tried out the way I...

    Immersion?

Funny enough, I just used Immersion in referring to Simulationist in another thread. Being the ability to suspend belief and feel like they are actually acting in the imaginary world they are playing in. Terminology I hear mostly used in LARPing but is certainly something that I see in RPGs...

What Does "Simulation" Mean To You? [+]

I'm going to say Immersion as I'm more partial to (my interpretation of) GDS.

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

Because we keep seeing people play them in our games? Three of the last four DnD games I've played have had a halfling character. Although the games did share some players, they were all different players. The fourth one was a spell jammer game so half the players opted for SJ characters...

D&D 5E (2024) Is 5E better because of Crawford and Perkins leaving?

In LARP combat, there are casters and archers. I've totally broke rank with an ongoing melee opponent to run 30' and smack an archer that has just shot their arrow, who is now otherwise defenseless. But, LARP combat is not the D&D system where everybody moves the same amount like clockwork. D&D...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

Well, they don't ...until they do. There's no rules for monsters. Everybody is just a 0-level NPC that the DM can bolt on whatever abilities they want onto, including player levels, or things that the players could never hope to equal. Still, things the DM can "easily" do is not always what the...

    D&D General Lets Make a 5e 2024 Setting - World Structure

I went with Parallel and Shattered worlds. I started with a large, cosmopolitain trade city that had gates to select other trade worlds, as well as some other gates farther away or on those worlds. Add in spell jammers. Throw in some dimensional travel devices along with it. Go from there. I...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

My usual goto answer is that everybody usually exists everywhere but in various percentages of the population. Cities are fairly cosmopolitan with villages dedicated to single ancestries scattered about as most villages are still farming and children are the retirement plan.

    AD&D 1E Best 1E AD&D rulebook?

I picked the DMG. There is still a lot to mine out of that book.

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

I'd have to agree. Despite everything being presented up front and equally, the actual layout and feeling is still a matter of discussion between the DM and players even in published settings. Personally, I would expect the majority of players to pick their weird ancestory and never bat an eye...

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

I run home-brews and do lots of history and backstory, but tend to give everything the PCs really need to remember in an elevator speech. Everything else gets presented in NPC interaction or emails I send out with the long version which I do not expect them to read. I don't expect most of the...

D&D General Mapping: How Do You Do It?

Draw a schematic as you go in theater of the mind. Detail combat areas when needed. I usually do this on the battle mat in the middle of the table. So you have one smaller map that has the basic layout of the place that they have explored so far, then another detailed (grid) map for wherever...

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

Completely disagree. For a new game (according to the game developers I know), things like character classes (or archetypes) and the setting are the things that gets buy in by buyers and new players. For D&D, limit it to such a bland, creativeless future and I think people will just wander away...
