    Difficulty Numbers: Scaling, or Static?

And that's ok. You do you. But how I view it as a DM, the PC nonchalantly swimming against a riptide or upstream in rapids because they trained swimming to an epic level is highlighting them. Just as, them swimming across a wide mid-current strength stream highlights them. Both have good chances...

D&D General WotC Continues D&D's Advance To Digital First Brand

If the restaurant is what created the hubbub, started the movement, and also allowed that drive-thru to continue to grow, I would probably build the restaurant and see, say, only a 10% gain, instead of a 20%. Because I think in the future - that restaurant might be needed to keep the growth going.

D&D General WotC Continues D&D's Advance To Digital First Brand

Nope. No source. I have stated three times now it is my thought or belief. And because 60% of sales come from something, say a McDonald's hamburgers, doesn't mean neglecting the fries is a good idea.

D&D General WotC Continues D&D's Advance To Digital First Brand

I don't think anything changed. I think the CEO is pushing to expand in an area that he feels they can make money. That's it. There is no mystery. But, I also think it is ignorant to focus on digital first, when the real sustained profit will come from in-person gaming. And, like I said, I could...

    Difficulty Numbers: Scaling, or Static?

I prefer static for skill challenges. Assigning the difficulty for skill challenges should not focus on the adventurer’s level of ability. It should focus on the context or environment. For example, if you have a player who has tailored their adventurer to be a great swimmer, do not simply...

D&D General WotC Continues D&D's Advance To Digital First Brand

I get that. I even posted it in my second paragraph. So I understand they are not mutually exclusive. It still does not negate the CEO overlooking the core reason its product was successful and why it's grown.

D&D General WotC Continues D&D's Advance To Digital First Brand

It makes me laugh a little, the willful ignorance of digital first. The game is built on in-person experiences. Hanging out with friends, being an outsider, and finding acceptance. It grew immensely because of things like Critical Role, an in-person experience. It grew even more with traveling...

Homebrew Do people in your game world put cheese on their apple pies??

Cheese and apples are a favorite of wineries. There is a winery in Temecula that is known for the brie and caramelized apple stuffed sourdough. As someone lucky enough to have had this - it is fantastic! As far as gaming, ever since I had that sourdough, I added it to a specific area on my game...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

Reynard, It is clear you don't think it is railroading, and that you don't really want to hear other perspectives. But from this thread, this much is true: 1. For some, what you did was not railroading. 2. For some, what you did walked the fenceline of railroading. 3. For some, what you did was...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

A DM that does it beforehand is similar to a DM that does dungeon ecology beforehand. Remember when the dungeon had skeletons in one room, a shambling mound in the next, a couple carrion crawlers in the hall, twelve bugbears sleeping next to a black pudding, and then a vampire? That was because...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

All I am saying is - this is the quest. This is the final objective. Yes, DMs set DCs all the time, and they take into account many things. (At least that's what we like to believe.) But, this is what the group has to do in order to get out and actually finish their campaign. So to say the DM...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

Nope. Not what I said. How about just designing the most common ones you think your group will use or have fun with. You can set them up just like you did the start of the adventure. DM: You enter the Feywild, and notice a satyr laying on a log. He sees you and perks up. "I see you just tried...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

Correct, there are a lot of variables. But you're still missing the point. This IS the quest - to get out of the Feywild. It's not placing a DC on some jump over a pit, understanding a church signage, or following a few tracks. Those are all things DMs have to make up in order to keep the "play...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

That is a fair criticism. I am not really thinking of it so negatively. I am thinking of it in terms of the DM reading the room and then deciding. As I said earlier, we make decisions based on emotions, experience, and a little bit of brains. So I look at whims as, "My itch as a DM is satisfied...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

That is unfortunate that he said, "locked down." He also said, "closing gates." He also said, "using magic to steal tuning forks from those arriving." Only later did he state there were plenty of ways off. That scenario he is describing does not sound at all like people have permission to just...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

I agree with your first paragraph for some scenarios. But for something like escaping a plane, in a game like D&D where players rarely contribute to the setting, I think it is pretty fair to say the DM can come up with most of the ways. I mean, in your scenario of the players coming up with...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

I was more thinking along the lines of a DM that prepares plotlines for each session, taking into account what happened last session. But I get your point. (y)

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

So all the other spells would work to get them out of the Feywild? Here is what you wrote: In any reading I can do, that sounds like other spells that might work wouldn't. I don't know, maybe after the walls of text you read, you changed your tune (pun intended). But it is clear that they were...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

Who decides reasonable here Max? You mean all DMs are reasonable. Ok. That actually goes along with my experience, but I know it doesn't match yours. So the DM that says, "Well, I was just waiting for you to do something reasonable, like ring the fairy bell five times, eat the kale salad, and...

What is "railroading" to you (as a player)?

Just so we are clear, I didn't call it a railroad. You left out the part of my quote where I said so specifically. I said that I have been around enough people on the forum to know that some will consider it a railroad, and their reason is just as legit as me saying it's not a railroad. The...
