Authors of the Book of Vile Darkness

I have a mind to actually sit down and, over the course of the summer, put together a Book of Vile Darkness, Necronomicon, or something less trademarky. My idea is to illustrate it, as well, on different kinds of papers and textures (hide?) and to really try and bring home the feeling that this...

I ran my first Epic session last Sunday

@pemerton , Up until about level 22, I was keeping close track of XP and leveling the party accordingly. However, now that we're in mid-Epic and the end is in sight (I've set an end date for late August), I've forgone experience points. I've decided to base leveling on achievement, and level 26...

    NeuroSpasta. GSL Cyberpunk

I have to thank you for all your work bringing 4e into modern and future space. I've used some of this material in my own game when the party encountered alien technology, and your material has made an entire Shadowrun-like campaign feasible for a friend of mine, which I am anxiously awaiting.

I ran my first Epic session last Sunday

Tuesday night my players reached level 25. I’m running a modified Fane of the Heresiarch mixed with the final chapter of Tomb of Horrors and my own content to create an Epic dungeon-adventure called “The Purgatory Siege”. While I appreciate the fourthcore philosophy (I use the nightmare damage...

I ran my first Epic session last Sunday

I love to read play reports, especially in the tier I'm running. I definitely appreciate the immense skill modifiers PCs have by this point, and I've actually ended up loosely implementing an Impossible check, around +10 more than a Hard check. I only pull it out for, say, wards on a god's...

What is the Highest Level You Have Reached From Level 1?

Currently DMing a 4e group that is level 25, with plans to go to 30. I played a 3e druid till level 11, when in my youthful ignorance I switched to a melee class to be more on par with the fighter *smacks self* and made it to level 18 as a ranger. I always DMed 2e as a little kid, but we never...

D&D 5E (2014) D&DN going down the wrong path for everyone.

I think you have a couple of options to prevent a total breakdown. Firstly, you could supply a threat so great they must continue to work together for mutual interest and survival. Up the stakes, and strike a little fear into them (oh it's quite possible, even in Epic, if you tailor certain...

D&D 5E (2014) D&DN going down the wrong path for everyone.

I agree that there is a breakdown as I'm currently DMing mid-Epic. It's possible to run the tier, but not 'right out of the box'. I've had to reinvent the wheel a bit for seven players, alter the math and push harder and harder (and closer to closer to fourthcore) in order to provide challenges...

D&D 5E (2014) You Can Send D&D Next Adventure For Next Dungeon Magazine Submission Window in April

I'm looking for as much original and usable Epic content as possible, things I could lift into my own campaign or reskin readily, which range from Epic material that was previously unusable (anything from MM1-2, Draconomicon, Open Dead, Elder Evils conversions, etc) to completely new (more Epic...

Excellent, now that that's out of the way, I have about thirty or so points to make in my next post regarding several other edition's weaknesses and a dangerous correlation with the direction of Next. I'll post when I'm able!

Nem was personally targeted. And if you switch 4e to PF, you might be nose-disjointed, too. Here, when I change a few words, this is how it reads. Let me know your feeling: "So when I say the following, I do it with the utmost respect (targeting you): Maybe the PF community needs to...

I'm also going to suggest Epic adventures with substance, because it's what many actual 4e players want most.

During the creation of a game, I think that approach is a huge boon. On the other hand, when it comes to a redux, a refinement or tighter treatment of the game, I believe you need to play it, study it, discuss it, experiment with it, and spend time with it, you know?

AbdulAlhazred I think we've talked about this before, but I honestly don't trust the current design team with making us that 4e redux. I'm not sure they ever really "got" what they created to begin with, if the adventures, design decisions, overall mishandling of the edition, and direction of 5e...

I'm happy to agree brick'n'mortar stores are AN indicator, but not the be-all, end-all indicator. I really don't think you can adequately weigh DDI + WotC book sales specific to 4e against anything else (and I imagine the reprints, novels, board games, tiles, and dungeon command must be raking...

Hey, I'm included in the badwrongfun too! AND the kvetching. Nothing boils my blood like the 'we won so get out of here, losers' vibe some of these other posts drip. 4e is destined to be the black sheep of the family, but I don't mind it one bit. It's bred some excellent company! Cheers...

Thereby becoming the 4e bard? @ForeverSlayer I think in comes down to all characters contributing meaningfully in all three pillars. I'm not saying a Bard outfights a Barbarian, but there has to be a baseline, some standard a Bard meets to attack and defend herself on an 'adequate' level...
