D&D General D&D Beyond: How do you add a ranger's primal companion?

Smh...yeah I guess it only gives you all the info you need to run the creature...I stand corrected as far as it technically being a stat block.

D&D General D&D Beyond: How do you add a ranger's primal companion?

Wait...what? I just made a quick 2024 ranger and its in a drop down under class features for the Beastmaster...its also on the digital sheet under features and I can pull the stats up for it by touching the ability....

D&D General D&D Beyond: How do you add a ranger's primal companion?

Have you actually tried making a 2024 Beastmaster in DDB? Honestly asking since maybe I'm misunderstanding the OP's question.

D&D General D&D Beyond: How do you add a ranger's primal companion?

Do you mean during character creation? If so... 1. make sure you have 2024 sources available ( I would turn 2014, and anything else you're not using off) 2. Under Ranger (Beastmaster subclass) features you can select Beast of the Land.

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

No I dont necessarily prefer more (or less) Im trying to understand the thought behind the semi-defined choice DH has made...that was why I was asking what point is the Pokémon level.

Yeah Im actually curious about their reasons as well...

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

No I get it... but it does sometimes feel like in DH threads there's an unwritten rule that any criticism of the game...especially if you think 5e does whatever it is better (or even as well) can't be abided (even if you like and are playing DH). Not saying you've done it but its definitely a thing.

    J/k... but only a little.

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

But the effects of fire and the effect of being cut by knives isn't vastly different? I feel like maybe I'm missing your point. Are you arguing in a system that uses pretty simplified mechanical representations of dmage... poison effects should, for some reason, be granular to the point of...

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

Pokémon type system?? Edit: so why not just have damage instead of differentiating physical and magical... or a better question... how many types signify we've entered Pokémon territory vs. Non Pokémon territory?

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

Yeah it seems like they are choosing exception based design... which I get and even like but it just feels a little all over the place to me. That said my group and I are enjoying our campaign and the complexity has hit a sweet spot for us that was much harder to hit using 5e.

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

Im inclined to lean towards this explanation. They've simplified it but it also has vestiges that make you scratch your head... like why not just have damage be damage and rely only on riders to differentiate... or have no conditions and leave them up to the fiction to determine vs. having a few...

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

Im talking, as an example, a fireball and summoned daggers (rain of blades) doing the same type of damage but we differentiate poisons... why? I get effects but im talking damage types not riders on damage.

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

Cant this apply to physical and magical damage as well? Edit:: In other words why is this more ridiculous than Fireball and Rain of Blades doing the same type of damage?

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

Lol... yeah I realized later that some "conditions" actually exist as sort of powers for adversaries... not sure why the choice was made not to make these generalized conditions...another example is poison. I'd be curious if any one has compiled these into one major list.

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

Yep... but that burning effect is not represented mechanically unless I create the rule for it... spend a fear to inflict 1d8 (physical) dmg... this dmg is rolled again whenever you activate an enemy until the PC spends a stress to extinguish the fire?? (Note this is just an off the top of my...

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

I think this touches on that something. I said earlier I feel is missing when I'm running DH. As a very simple example there's only 2 types of damage in DH... its either physical or magical, while that simplifies things (and for certain players in my group thats a godsend) it can also feel too...

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

Hmm... ok, trying to decide between this monster book and Incredible Creatures: Adversaries. One seems to offer alot more bag for your buck but I know Mike Underwood has actually done work on the DH corebook so this may be a higher quality monster book.

If you do grab this I'd like to hear your thoughts on it, especially how you think it compares to the monsters in the corebook when it comes to difficulty and tone.
