    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

There were 2, I believe. The first from Sword & Sorcery, and the second one in house (maybe?).

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

As I thought I made clear in the OP: this thread isn't about "my game's" core mechanic. It is about core mechanics in general. It isn't goal oriented, other than as a venue to drink in some other perspectives. I am not hiding anything -- I am process exploring in the form of online discussion...

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

I don't mean to say such a book would be better GM advice than stuff we have seen, like Robin's Laws of Good Gamemastering or The Lazy GM's guides or anything else. i think it would have value, though, in the same way that reprinting and expounding upon Aaron Allston's Strike Force had real value.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

To be clear, I don't intend to pick a core mechanic and THEN decide what the game is about. The purpose here is to talk about system in an organized way, which means starting with core mechanic. I am interested in what people find compelling about different forms of core mechanics, for the very...

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

I actually wish they would do a "Gygaxian Sourcebook" that was a collection of edition neutral game mastering writing by EGG, including stuff from the 1E DMG. It would not only honor his legacy, but remind folks of what the original intent of the game was (even if we aren't required to stick to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

I am still holding out hope that they are going to announce something new, something innovative. But they won't.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Others are likely to disagree, but I don't think emulation of reality is a worthy design goal at all. I think the primary, maybe only, design goal is to achieve what you intend in play. That probably reads as wishy-washy, but it is true. If you want your system to feel like gritty fiction, you...

    Shadowdark: Stocking A Dungeon Example

I am excited to see what you did. Shadow od the Demon Lord is one of those games I keep meaning to find the time to run and can't seem to land.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Just trying to approach things methodically. I know threads drift and that's fine. I just don’t want everyone to burn themselves out on the "skills" discussion before can actually have it. ;)

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Fair enough. I am not trying to scold or shut down the discussion. I just wanted to note where I saw the distinction -- mostly because my intent is to scaffold a system of my own, starting with a core mechanic.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

They are the primary implementation of the core mechanic.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

Not that this thread hasn't already drifted, but I think skill granularity is well out of the scope of "core mechanics."

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

You are certainly allowed to like what you like, rational or otherwise.

Roll under is still, by definition, "big number good" -- especially if Price Is Right rules apply.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

I'm the worst of both worlds: I can't figure out why folks have issues, one way or another. It is just arithmetic, one way or another. The whole THAC0 complaints has always struck me overdone. I know that people have trouble with certain kinds of operations, and it isn't a reflection of...

D&D General Besides Nimble, are there other stripped down versions of 5e...

I feel like the modern ranger suffers from the same problem as the modern druid: an incidental, almost ribbon ability has become their whole personality.

Paizo Accidentally Reveals Pathfinder: Feybound Book

Apropos of nothing: in multiple different campaigns, I have used half elves to represent fae changelings (faerie children foisted on human parents) as well as the human children who were raised among the fae.

Let's Talk About Core Game Mechanics

This is really neither here nor there, but while I don't particularly like or dislike 3d6 for action resolution (I was a Champions player) I much prefer making my random encounter and other charts on 3d6. That's where the bell curve shines IMO.

    Shadowdark Shadowdark Organized Play?

I usually don't use the torch timer but one player this weekend was very into it. It made me realize that I should have something impressive and intimidating for the in person timer. Also, I need to find Shadowdark evocative Luck tokens. I have been using poker chips but I can do better...
