Level Up (A5E) Dream spell vs elves

Right there on Fey Ancestry, it says "magic can’t put you to sleep." However, I like the idea from Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes that Elves can go to sleep (and dream) if they like, but they don't like how their subconscious takes control during that time and gives them dreams with complex...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

Mind you it's an optional rule at the DMG - but I think it was obvious to the designers as well that having more than, say, 8-10 stat blocks of moderate complexity as minions and roll damage for each of them would be too much to ask for a DM. Level Up also has a similar thing where it transforms...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

I think the mass monster attack rules from the DMG can be useful in those cases. You say that a certain number of them automatically hit depending on their attack bonus, target AC and the number of attackers. It's a bit less elegant, but it can at least make it so that the lower-CR monsters...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

My understanding of TSR-era progression is that it's a growth from someone who fumbles a lot to someone who almost always hits. This is in direct opposition to 5e's design philosophy, where you're expected to succeed at what you're doing 65% of the time at any level (as a general measure)...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

As much as I respect your view on this conversation, you can't first say something obviously subjective like "My argument is why many people don't really enjoy 5e's combat even in games like Baldur's Gate 3" and then ask for raw data. You're also working with vibes. Personally I greatly enjoy...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

Um, I appreciate the comment but what you are explaining seems to be about 3.5. I was more interested in TSR-era D&D (so AD&D 2E and earlier), since I felt like the magic item curve for 3E onwards is fairly well explained.

Sometimes I see that people are interacting with someone I blocked, and I check what they're interacting with. It usually reminds me why I put them on the block.

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

Just out of curiosity, are there any official sources on the "expected magic item curve"? When trying to grok TSR eta D&D, people tend to say that characters are supposed to progress via magic items (because class features are more sparse), but they never mention what kind of items or in which...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

I honestly think d4 is too much in that regard. d6 (how B/X used to do it) or d10 would make more sense.

D&D General Mimic third most popular character in award winning manga.

I recently started Frieren and I think it's an excellent anime. You can definitely see the B/X influences on the JRPG genre as a whole, and the world (despite being basically Fantasy Tropes: the Setting) feels like a well-thought out, fun fantasy setting. I also think the titular character is...

ZEITGEIST What Are People's Experiences with the Zeitgeist Prestige Classes?

A player mentioned they want to get a Prestige Class in the future in a Level Up campaign I want to start, and I was a bit surprised. I actually didn't know that A5E had Prestige Classes! Anyway, a quick delve into the Zeitgeist book and I see that there is an interesting selection of PrCs. So...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

To add on to this, we have quotes from EGG himself in these very forums (and Dragonsfoot) where his solution to the baby orc problem is "Raise them as good and then immediately kill them so they get sent to the Good Afterlife". We have to admit that race essentialism is not that foreign to D&D's...

GMs - what is your vetting process for finding new players?

My vetting process depends on how I'm recruiting the player: 1- If it's from my friend circle, I try to infer from conversation if they'd be a good fit for my play style. If I'm looking to recruit a player for an ongoing campaign, I might first have them join as a guest with a simpler...

D&D General Who “owns” a PC after the player stops using them?

My friend, the permission you dream of is essentially destroying all social contract, all nuance, all friendly communication in favour of robotic legal arrangements. That's not healthy, nor is it wise. Sometimes, you don't like a game and that's it. Nobody commits a felony against you when that...
