D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

In the books? He's mentioned as having one, but it rarely comes up. More of a movie thing, where it's very visible on him.

Did not expect devilish Saxophone. :devilish:

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

It was more of a group project, with simultaneous launches of both the Dragonlance modules and the Dragonlance novels. Weis is on record that the initial idea of knights riding dragons was thought up in the car, and several of the initial characters. But it's hard to tell how much cross...

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

I believe the authors have been adamant that they are not connected at all.

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

Yep. 1992 Tales of the Lance states that Takhisis was called Tii'Mhut (p117) and Paladine was called Bah'mut (p113) by the people of Istar. That would be firmly 2E territory. So, at least 34 years!

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

Arcane cannot heal. D&D was not the first system to use this trope, but I think it is one of the biggest contributors to popularize the trope, and soaks into countless other media.

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

There was a definite chunk of players of mixed heritage that identified with half-elves, and wanted to play them for that specific reason.

D&D General Friday Fun: What Are Your Top 3 Playable Species

Elf, Tiefling, Goblin. All incredibly flexible and able to be portrayed in countless entertaining ways, while still being more interesting than humans!

D&D General The 3.5 Binder was a really cool class

As mentioned, it wouldn't be hard to use the Warlock chassis. Each Vestige would be a set of Invocations and 1-5 spells known while that Vestige is bound. You gain the ability to bind multiple as you increase in level, etc Most of the Invocations would need to be custom of course.

D&D 5E (2024) How Many Offensive Spells Do You Ned to Know?

Vicious Mockery and Tasha's Hideous Laughter should be more than offensive enough, until you get Irresistable Dance. Most illusion spells can be incredibly offensive as well, if you're creative.

D&D General The 3.5 Binder was a really cool class

Agreed. I can see how his post triggered a "well, actually" the same way we did to yours. I think we're all roughly on the same page now. :geek:

D&D General The 3.5 Binder was a really cool class

Our responses are based on you saying there was zero expectation, not that there was never a requirement. Zero expectation means (to me) that they made no effort to encourage roleplaying the binding of vestiges. I hope you can agree that the game does encourage it.

D&D General The 3.5 Binder was a really cool class

Agreed. It doesn't say you must, but they put some word count into helping a GM do so, and provided personality traits as well. How often (if at all) was a personal choice for each table, but the expectation was definitely greater than zero.

D&D General The 3.5 Binder was a really cool class

What we did was a dramatic roleplay the first time each Vestige was bound. But then the player got a seal or item that represented that Vestige, and they could make hushed supplications (or whatever suited their character) afterwards. We didn't have many people play it, but there was some fun...

D&D General The 3.5 Binder was a really cool class

Agreed, the Binder was absolutely dripping with style. It did have some thematic overlap with Warlock at the time, but Warlock wasn't as firmly cemented the way it is now. It was also a little on the weak side. I could easily see a homebrew Binder using the 5E Warlock as a design chassis...

D&D General Hypothetical: D&D without ability scores (or bonuses)

Could it work? Absolutely, lots of systems exist that work fine without them. Would it be D&D? Not at first, but give it twenty years and it would probably get normalized into "That's what D&D is." I will say, the staggering saturation of ability scores across so many games, both table and...

D&D Movie/TV How would you build characters for a KPop Demon Hunters campaign?

Honmoon has classic "Cast once every year for 100 years to become permanent" vibes. Definitely more of a plot device than anything an individual class should give, by radius alone.

D&D 5E (2014) Real Emotions at the Gaming Table

Both 1 and 2 in equal measure. But I voted 1 because I would absolutely wonder.
