    Deadlands: Lost Colony (SWADE) Post-Mortem

I recently got Shadow of the Weird Wizard which is a pretty interesting medium weight fantasy game. Ever tried that, @Retreater ?

    Best Tolkien Art

My parents had this on a chopping board, hung up in our kitchen when I was young - before I ever got into role playing. Which is interesting because they aren’t particularly fantasy fans. My first exposure to the hobbit was an audio adaption which I think was on the radio.

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

My most recent RPG related purchase was two strong hooks… Why, you ask? To hang this fantastic artefact… That’s technically a blanket, but we all know it’s a cloth map of Magnamund, the world where the Lone Wolf books and games are all set.

Epic/High fantasy game for a one-shot introductory game

Dragon Warriors is one of my favourite old school RPGs, I played it back when it first came out and probably played it as much as BECMI D&D. The out-of-combat stuff is a little thin by modern standards but the game is still solid. I wouldn’t really describe it as epic or high fantasy...

RPG Evolution: Game Cancelled, Now What?

We have two groups, a weekly one of GM+3 and a monthly one of GM+5. For the monthly one we will only play one-down, and since it is so infrequent we would negotiate a different weekend in the month to make that happen. For the weekly game we try to only role-play with everyone there...

    TTRPG gaming tables

I’m considering buying a gaming table, but for board games. With RPGs the physical components are reliably put away between sessions but with a long board game we might want to split a session in two and that would mean leaving stuff out. Even though I have a ‘dedicated’ gaming room it gets...

    How often do you play?

I have two groups, with a large overlap of members. One plays weekly on a mid-week evening, the other plays monthly on a weekend day-evening slot. Works out as an average of weekly as the mid-week session includes board gaming too.

How likely are you to use D&D for your next game?

The new option doesn’t quite capture it, but it’s close enough. We played plenty 5e but got tired of it. Last D&D-ish campaign we played (about a year ago) was Level Up. One of our occasional GMs fancies trying 5:24 next, which should start in a month or two when I complete my Savage Worlds...

How likely are you to use D&D for your next game?

There isn’t an option for my situation: not currently playing D&D, someone in our group wants to try running the new D&D rules next.

    Should Wizardry Require Player Intelligence?

I don’t think Rincewind’s player needed a superior intelligence to play him. Or any of the wizards on the Discworld for that matter!

Dungeons & Dragons Comments On Possibility of Future Movie Projects

The Secret Level episode on D&D is fantastic, and the Critical Role animation is also great fun to watch. I think an animated streaming series is the natural home for a series based on D&D IPs - the costs must surely be less than a feature film with the live action and marketing costs that entails.

Legacy of Kain Is Getting a TTRPG

Remasters of the original computer games have also been released so there is a wave of fan interest to ride as well. Excellent timing from the publisher.

    Independent Spaces for RPG Discourse

A friend of mine runs a hobby business and the market forces him to use Facebook as a primary contact channel, but that then became very stressful when FB decided to close down his page with no warning, consultation or any apparent reason to do so. So sites being owned by individuals is...

    Independent Spaces for RPG Discourse

When Morrus closes down the D&D forums and only the Level Up forum remains we can call this site a ‘house organ’. Until then, I will consider this an independent forum site.

How important is it to you or your players for characters to feel "overpowered"?

I voted ’somewhat important’. It’s a nuanced thing. My players want their character to shine at the appropriate time (like the ranger tracking as an example) but they don’t want to cake-walk things. Also, being able to shine doesn’t mean that they are impervious to damage or threat. That is a...

    Dragonbane general thread [+]

In card based systems (as a Savage Worlds fan, I have a lot of practical experience of them) having more cards is how your have ‘better initiative’ since cards represent options. Dragonbane already has a mechanic that gives a character more cards, it’s just a Heroic Ability rather than...

    My "Savage" Experience

I know some people have that experience. I can only say mine is very different and combat moves along at a nice clip for our group.

That sounds like another bad habit people learn from playing CRPGs with a central protagonist character and a cast of supporting characters.

    My "Savage" Experience

I think Savage Worlds supports the ‘5 room dungeon’ model quite well since that isn’t usually about a grind. But more involved ‘dungeons’ than that are tricky. Quick Encounters are definitely something to lean into when wanting to have lots of encounters. If I am running a dungeon-style...

    My "Savage" Experience

I really enjoyed running Eris Beta V for my group. It was written for Deluxe and the previous Sci-Fi Companion but would require almost no conversion to run with SWADE and the new Sci-Fi Companion. The first half of the campaign is quite open with lots of events for the PCs to get involved in...
