    D&D 5E (2014) On Representation and Roleplaying

My question here, is who is sad? Who is objecting? If Native Americans are frustrated with their portrayal in westerns, it's probably better that writers find something else to write their westerns about if they can't seem to nail the Native American perspective. Yeah, that means they don't get...

D&D 5E (2014) What If Ranged Wpn Attacks Used Wisdom?

I think when it comes to ranged combat, it's less a matter of perceiving your target, and more "how do I use my hands to get this projectile from me to my target?" I am pretty comfortable with dexterity representing that kind of precision.

D&D General What does "magic" mean? [Read carefully, you can't change your vote]

I chose the last option, mostly because it depends on context. If we are talking about magic in a metatextual way, then most of D&D involves magic. Elves' ability to rest through meditation is magic. A barbarian's ability to spiritually attune themselves with totem animals is magic. Scythe...

    D&D 5E (2014) Charm, the evil spells

So when it comes to protecting a child, what method of defense starts being bad, and why?

    D&D 5E (2014) Charm, the evil spells

Well, like hitting. Your parents always told you not to hit. When you hit someone it hurts. It's bad. On the scale of badness, it's pretty low, but it's definitely on there.

    D&D 5E (2014) Charm, the evil spells

Would you feel the same way if the means were more conventionally violent? Does hitting someone who is about to murder a child justify hitting? A blunt instrument instead of a fist? A knife instead of a blunt instrument? A gun instead of a knife? Let's see, what's next... a flame thrower? A...

    D&D General Why is D&D 4E a "tactical" game?

I think I prefer the reverse. Room for interpretation means the narrative applications are broader. Don't get me wrong, rule precision is great, but sometimes a little freedom is nice.

    D&D 5E (2014) Charm, the evil spells

This scene springs to mind as well. I think that movie is an object lesson in the need to critically examine media. Get a bunch of lovable, nerdy, quirky protagonists together, convince your audience to laugh and root for them, slip in some misogyny and you have The Big Bang Theory The Revenge...

    D&D 5E (2014) Charm, the evil spells

I guess you could say that. We have differences in sentencing for a reason. At least in the case of deception, the victim still has their faculties to see through the ruse. In the case of the charm, it's no better than a knife to the throat. In fact, it's arguably worse given that you are...

    D&D General Why is D&D 4E a "tactical" game?

The two things that do it for me are 1) Theatre of the Mind is greatly disfavored in 4e. Movement and positioning is baked in to so many abilities that you are doing a disservice to the game in TOTM. 2) Putting character abilities into discreet powers, rather than generalized abilities feels...

    D&D 5E (2014) Charm, the evil spells

I think that it's pretty much the difference between lying and coercion. It's my feeling that most people are more OK with lying than coercion, since coercion typically comes with the threat of violence. (Though in this case, the end result is rape either way.)
