WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

Right. Someone asked what I thought was missing, that's all.

New Lord of the Rings movie in the works centered around Tom Bombadil

That seems extra silly considering those actors are 25 odd years older than when those movies were filmed. Just do it as a sequel. I will never understand the need to constantly return to the same well over and over. but we have talked about this with regards to D&D settings, so...

15 for me. Man, 35 was a GREAT age.

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

If you reject the terminology, there really is not anything to talk about, is there?

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

I don't think that matters. After all, they are making Dark Sun and Swords and Sandals peaked more like 70 years ago.

Aren't the later Mistborn books basically noir second world urban fantasy?

New Lord of the Rings movie in the works centered around Tom Bombadil

Other reports suggest this film is set well after the Return of the King and folds in elements of Return of the Shadow. So Tom will appear in a sequel to LotR, if the reports hold.

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

Because a key defining feature of "Urban Fantasy" the genre is that it is set in the contemporary world (or a second world very, very close to it). I don't quite understand what the confusion is.

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

It is so strange that some folks want to fight against the simplest reason: it is fun to be excited for official D&D things.

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

The genre terms are well established. That doesn't mean there aren't fuzzy line or corner cases, but you having an internal, personal definition based on your understanding of the words does not have any impact on the existence or viability of the genre terminology. I have no idea what you mean...

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

Sure. They "could." But that would also mean reviving d20 Modern (or make a 5E Modern or whatever). That all sounds much less likely than even the high unliklihood of them doing a Urban Fantasy setting at all. I only brought it up because someone asked what fantasy subgenres were not covered by...

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

I have not looked deeply into it, but based on the campaign page, it seems so. I think D&D could have a setting like that. I personally wouldn't do 2026 modern, but maybe 1926 modern.

I find it very strange that folks don't know what urban fantasy is in 2026. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_fantasy

Is this what it feels like to be a forever GM?

I have a table of brand new players, ages 30 to 40, who are hyped and enthusiastic about the game. I don't know where everyone is finding these apathetic players, but maybe invite ones that are actually excited to play?

Sunday Nonsense: Which TTRPG Systems Survive

Sure. I am among them (although I would guess I first discovered GURPS in the early 90s). It is just so very granular and crunchy and I don't know anyone who still plays it.

WotC Why WotC SHOULD Make A New Setting

You seem to keep missing that this is NOT about me not liking or "wanting" settings from other publishers, large or small. it is about the desire to be excited for something great from official D&D -- in this case a setting that creates the same excitement and wonder as Eberron when it came out...
