Let's talk about system options versus character options.

Fate is a good example here: Create an Advantage is an action, and because of the open ended nature of Fate, what that advantage is could just as easily be "disarm" as "trip" or whatever.

Dungeons & Dragons Announces Arcana Unleashed, New Magic-Themed Sourcebook at $49.99 Price Point

Compatibility was only ever promised for the existing adventure library.

Dungeons & Dragons Announces Arcana Unleashed, New Magic-Themed Sourcebook at $49.99 Price Point

There is no evidence of this claim. The idea that they don't intend people to buy the new books if they already have the 2014 books is laughable.

Let's talk about system options versus character options.

[This is part of my ongoing effort to get a solid conceptual foundation for my own RPG design, so the goal is to get a sense of what other folks like and don't like in the domain of the subject.] When it comes to mechanical options available to players, it seems there are two poles: options...

Dungeons & Dragons Announces Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, New Adventure Book Featuring Red Wizards of Thay

How high does the current starter set go? Maybe it is a follow up for that?

Dungeons & Dragons Announces Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, New Adventure Book Featuring Red Wizards of Thay

Maybe, but they just did a "high level adventure" and I wouldn't think they would follow up immediately with another.

Why do so many campaigns never finish? Genuinely curious what others think

This is a good point. I wonder how many campaigns open with an assumed "end state" versus those that are open ended. My current campaign has a clear goal, with no predefined path to it: the PCs are a BBEG revenge squad. But this campaign has been "artificial" from the perspective that we have...

Why do so many campaigns never finish? Genuinely curious what others think

I have certainly run campaigns that collapsed before completing. More often, I rush a failing campaign to finish earlier than expected. I think failure is usually a result of having too much of a plan ahead of time -- like running an Adventure Path or campaign length Adventure. If you you play...

D&D’s 2026 Announcements: Roadmap Contains A Mix of New and Familiar

Too bad WotC does not follow Paizo's examples and release everything as OPEN and actually let folks decide what they wish to buy.

D&D’s 2026 Announcements: Roadmap Contains A Mix of New and Familiar

Canonically, isn't Cthulhu actually a sort of high priest of the Elder Gods?

The magic lady can probably make herself have whatever skin tone she desires.

D&D’s 2026 Announcements: Roadmap Contains A Mix of New and Familiar

So is the Ravenloft book the first thing for the year? Is it usual for nothing to be published until June? Or does it look like, for some reason, things got delayed this year by a quarter or so?

Critical Role's The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 Comes Out in June

Or the Duffer brothers just talked to WotC/Hasbro. Both "demogorgon" and "mind flayer" aren't really protectable (especially since they don't actually look like the things with the same names in D&D) but Vecna certainly is. I am sure WotC realized how much they benefited from ST, and they...

Critical Role's The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 Comes Out in June

Stranger Things Vecna has nothing to do with actual Vecna, so it would actually probably be more confusing than anything to use the name in Vox Machina (even if the VM Vecana is much closer to D&D Vecna).

Dungeons & Dragons Announces Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, New Adventure Book Featuring Red Wizards of Thay

I'm all for the idea. I might even pick one or both up based on reviews. I wonder if the December release might be something similar, with a "martial" focused book and an associated adventure (even potentially one in Dark Sun gladitorial pits or whatever).

Check Out This Early Arcana Unleashed Artwork

I just want to highlight this piece. This is a great, evocative, very D&D adventure piece and reminds me of some of the best of the old Dragon Magazine covers.

Dungeons & Dragons Announces Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, New Adventure Book Featuring Red Wizards of Thay

Maybe this signals a shift to Tier scale adventures, rather than whole campaign ones.
