    My Gripe with D&D Experience

I have a (petty) gripe too: It is no longer in Crystal City, VA close to where I live. If I am to go all the way to Indiana for a con, I might as well just go to Gen Con instead

    D&D 3.5 for Post-Apocalyptic Games?

I second GUPRS for gritty post-apocalypse. Or D6 Adventure* for cinematic. I would also have suggested the post-apocalypse book for d20 Modern, but I see you already nixed that idea. * I'm playing Fallout 3 right now and it has inspired me to create some themed templates for this system (such...

    Hkat!

I remember playing this back before HK action films were mainstream. As I recall, it made a great "beer & pretzels" game. I really liked the multi-role concept of playing an actor who is in turn playing a role in a film (and "bidding" for the best parts). I might still have the books...

Forked Thread: Disappointed in 4e - 3.x Classic Modules

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Green Ronin's Freeport trilogy

    Your Second Love

Overall, it was Star Wars (D6) for me, judging that it is the game I ran most after D&D. Honorable mention goes to: -Rifts (you know you loved it back in the day) -Mage: the Ascension (the themes of this game spoke to me...too bad my friends just didn't "get it") -GURPS (during my short-lived...

Forked Thread: PC concept limitations in 4e

All I have to say is that playing BECMI long ago, I had two fighters: one was a dirty pirate called Dundraff the Unclean*, the other a noble Atruaghin warrior named Hawk-Sees-All. Very different characters, same class. If I were to create them in 4E, Dundraff would be a rogue and Hawk would be...

    Ampersand: The Bard (merged)

Heh. The Vicious Mockery at-will attack pretty much disproves the "sticks and stones" saying (psychic damage + effect) :)

    From 1st to Maximum Level

In 17+ years, and four editions, I have yet to accomplish either of these. Am I alone in this? Tell me your stories of glory or woe.

What do you want? (Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target audience?)

I was answering this part of the question: "What have you wanted from D&D, that has never seemed to happen yet...?" Unfortunately, I think the problem has less to do with the particulars of a D&D edition and more with the nature of RPGs as a hobby. To play a long-running campaign is a...

What do you want? (Forked Thread: When did I stop being WotC's target audience?)

Ok, confession time: I want to be able to run a D&D campaign from 1st to whatever the maximum level is, or play a character to maximum level. I've never been able to do either of those in 17+ years of gaming :(

Was Reading My Mentzer Expert Rules and What did I see?

This image shows the classic D&D party: a group of evil, sadistic freebooters (regardless of what is written under "alignment" in their character sheets) assaulting a poor, old leper for the XP and his stuff. You can tell by their looks of murderous glee as the leper raises his gnarled hands in...

    DDM SKirmish has ended

I think this is a good thing. I always felt that having the skirmish game alongside the RPG created brand confusion. I'm pro 4E, but just for a moment I'm going to put on my hat of 4E negativity: Why have a miniatures skirmish game when 4E is already exactly that? ;)

Three Sides to Every Story - An Idea for Encounter Notes

This is hardly revolutionary, but I think my encounters would benefit from writing notes for different ways to "solve" them. The main ones I can think of are combat, stealth, and non-combat. The "combat" notes are obvious: stats, tactics, etc. The "stealth" notes would include creatures...

Got the D&D 4e Starter Set...So whatcha wanna know?

Thank you. I'm quite proud of it myself. That's the thing, it looks to me like people are asking for this without realizing it. Character creation has become more complex since OD&D Basic. I just don't think you could include self-contained character creation in a 4E starter set without more...

Got the D&D 4e Starter Set...So whatcha wanna know?

I don't see what the problem is. If WotC were to include the entirety of the D&D game in the "starter" set, what would be the point of having the three books? I think this product suffices as an affordable introduction to the game without competing with the main product. Yes, I know it's not...

How Do YOU Envision 4th Edition?

For me, it's probably a mish-mash of all the fantasy media I've been exposed to throughout the years, from novels, to movies, to comics, to anime, etc. It's a mess :) I'm so sorry. My experience is entirely opposite. My exposure to RPGs makes me imagine any kind of game as an RPG, even Monopoly!
