When the system gets in the way

I never said anything of the sort. You can play a Role-Playing Game without doing much Role-Playing and still have fun. That's, cool IF that is what your group likes. Whatever works for you and your players. I think what is going on here is I'm refering to Role-Playing as being in character...

When the system gets in the way

it's still not role-playing. Role-playing is doing/saying what your character would in a given situation. A min-maxer is a person who has to have the stats, feats, skill, and whatever else as close to perfect for statistical performance as possible or he/she will not be happy. The logic for...

Is mapping a lost art with adventurers?

What I did instead of making them map is made a maping skill. I assumed if the party had a character with the skill that they would be maping as they go. When a situation came up where it would be important to have a map (needing to find their way out of a large dungeon or remembering where...

When the system gets in the way

Damn right, min-maxing is NOT role-playing.

When the system gets in the way

I'll point out that I did not say that this is a recent developement. I also did not mention any version of D&D being less or more video gamey than the other. I am very aware of the influence of RPGs on video games, I have played video games since the first atari came out.

    Are you a Grognard?

Grognard? Yes, I am. I have played ancients, modern, fantasy, sci-fi, WWII and many other war games. As a side note: I don't count prepainted mini games or main stream board games (Risk,Diplomacy, A&A and the like) toward gaining your Grognard stripes. I like both RPGs and Minis War Games...

Is mapping a lost art with adventurers?

I tried to get the players to map out as the go because that is how we did it on the "olden days". I tried it when 3.0 came out. I was DMing for RPing total noobs and maping didn't work with them so I junked it. Haven't missed it since. :D

When the system gets in the way

I think d20's video gamey/power-up feel makes stats more important in d20 than they are in most other systems. When the game is so focused on stats and such it tends make players want to speak and think in terms of stats instead of worrying about being and thinking in character. That's why I...

Is Gen Con worth the money?

I'm not sure that I would be going if I didn't have free room and transportation. :D

Do Personal Opinions Of Authors, Etc Dissuade You From Purchases?

Factors I consider when buying RPG stuff: #1-Do I have a use for the book? #2-Overall quality #3-Price #4-Author's rep (based on their works) #5- Publishers rep (if author is not self-published) #6- business practices of publishers/authors #7- personal opinion of authors #6 & #7 can jump up...

    Earthdawn info

I wish I could help you on this, but I only own the Redbrick versions of Earthdawn. It's pretty cool.

    D20 Modern or Spycraft II?

part of the problem here is maybe some posters are comparing core book vs core book while others are comparing core books+PDFs+supplements(d20 modern) vs core book(SC2). I think if I were to pick up a couple PDFs, I could make d20 modern do almost all of what like about SC2.

    D20 Modern or Spycraft II?

The flavor and style of SC2 is part of what makes it a cool game IMO. It also has some really cool mechanics for chases and the like. I like armor as DR, and I know you can adapt d20 modern to use DR. I think SC2 would make a great base for a matrix style game. Besides the other things I...

    Girlfriend in Gamer's Clothing

Well I haven't run into anything like this yet. Of course the only female players I have played with like gaming. My girlfriend obviously has no interest in gaming, though she respects that it is my hobby. She never has demanded or even asked that I skip a session to be with her. I have skipped...

    Hardcore gamers

yeah, I had that happen to me once. Some idiot stole my saturn and I had trunk load of WH40k and RPGing stuff. It was around $2000 worth of stuff, almost more than the car was worth. I was definitely more pissed about my gaming stuff than my car. got the car back, but the gaming stuff was...

ENWorld, what is best in d20 modern?

Man, the d20 Modern stuff from RPGobjects look really good. I might have to play d20 Modern just to give some of their stuff a go: Blood & Fists and the other Blood stuff looks good Darwins World, I'm gonna be playing that soon The NPC generator is nice too.

Getting your players into it! DMing

Besides trying to give each NPC a different voice and/or personality I try to make sure that the NPC directly converse with the PCs. I have seen a few GMs that make the mistake of having their NPC basically be either just mooks for killing or question answering machines. heck the PCs have a...

Is 3.x Your Favorite Version of D&D?

I voted no. I think the mechanics in 3.5 are better that the other edtions, but it totally lost the D&D feel IMO. It's just a little too close to video game/board game for my taste and I think that is what made it lose the old school feel. That's Ok though cuz C&C managed to take the previous...

    Good Superhero-Game?

I mostly agree. M&M is no question the best game under the OGL, better than D&D, better than D20 Modern, and better than anything else that is OGL. M&M is the best (overall) Supers RPG. It can model anything HERO can, and does it in a much more simple way. The system is easy to teach to...

Feats: Not enough or too many?

True, but there is a much higher % in Third party books IMO. We all know WoTC is no where near perfect.
