I mean, I think ShadowMusk would be an indie rpg if he and a small team made i, even if they spend tens of millions on art and marketing. It would be weird to put an upper budget limit on the meaning of "indie." How would you decide what that limit was?

That is more aetherpunk or magitech, IMO. Contemporary Fantasy is usually set in our world, with magic stuff.

Sure, and nothing stops indie developers from doing something very traditional, or traditional developers from doing something experimental. In TTRPGs there is also the question of what constitutes an indie developer. Is Kobold indie?

To use video games as an example, there are "indie" video games of every conceivable style, genre and level of quality. "Indie" doesn't mean anything from a gameplay standpoint. Same with TTRPGs -- but, for some reason, we have decided that "indie" roleplaying games must have x, y and z qualities.

The rest of your post was mostly about combat vs non combat detail and depth. That is a wholly different issue. "Mini games" and "switching modes" allows a game to include elements that are important to play (or at least important to the designers) on their own merits. Forcing games to use the...

"Indie" as a description of what something is, as opposed to how it was made and by whom, has always bugged me -- in music, in games, in film, in fiction, etc... Indie is when people manage to create it without the benefit of a big corporation. It has nothing to do with genre.
