D&D General [+] More Robust 'Fantasy Race' Mechanics for D&D-alikes / Redeeming 'Race as Class' for Modern D&D [+]

Well yes. D&Ds default answer to any idea is no. It might be no, but. But it is no. The skill system is Exhibit A. You can't do that if this. We give you X points then take half away if you don't stay in the class box. The restriction on non-humans in AD&D. Stat limits, level limits...

D&D General [+] More Robust 'Fantasy Race' Mechanics for D&D-alikes / Redeeming 'Race as Class' for Modern D&D [+]

If you truly want Humans to be the golden child stop beating around and DO it. Give them obvious advantages instead of making all the other races play in the cruel shoes. That is my main objection is that Humans are not actually better, everyone else is worse. This does however follow the...

D&D General [+] More Robust 'Fantasy Race' Mechanics for D&D-alikes / Redeeming 'Race as Class' for Modern D&D [+]

This is still hobbling everyone else to make Humans look good. Why is a floating stat bump and and extra skill point not enough? But then I don't see Humans as the golden children that must be the best. I try to keep any race from becoming the game Mary Sue. I can deal with Dwarven...

D&D General [+] More Robust 'Fantasy Race' Mechanics for D&D-alikes / Redeeming 'Race as Class' for Modern D&D [+]

I think anything along that line should be campaign specific. The game itself should be as open as possible. In my own world Centaurs don't train as Rouges, doesn't mean that can't try, but the species itself is anti stealthy. I have a different method for balancing the clearly unbalanced...

TSR On the Relative Merits of the TSR Editions

Mine does not have issues, but again I am careful with my books. Pretty should not come at the cost of lower quality. I like nice pictures too. I like my books not falling apart more. What shocked me was the push back I got from those that bought Forry and had ink smear. I said take it...

D&D General When Was it Decided Fighters Should Suck at Everything but Combat?

Yes. Especially by the 3e skill system. Again D&D is a "No" system. Put down that interesting idea and get back in your box. You start with 2 skill points per level, less than the other core classes and you further handicap by non-class skills costing twice as much. Any skill that is not...

    AD&D 2E Huh. AD&D 2e is my favorite D&D

The people always make the game. The rules are not the game.

I don;t like Human centric AD&D method of making Humans "special" by making everyone else suck. But I agree with the thinking here. The game, needs a baseline, and we know what Humans are. We is them. It make sense to make then the no adjustment race.

I recall that thing. I don't have one any more. We never used the complications.

    AD&D 2E Huh. AD&D 2e is my favorite D&D

And how many characters worshiped Lovitar solely because of the picture in Deities & Demigods? Before TSR went family frenzied. That CD was the source of my own editions. Edit like mad baby. Because of it I have tools to make books in the sanctum. Lordy yes. Going to the UM campus weekly...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I'll grant that. It's not uncommon. As to the RPGA, it is now the D&D Adventurers League. Hasbro is doing everything to scrape the Open Gaming License off the bottom of its evil little shoes. The name change came in 2014. I have an intertubes machine, I can know anything. Tournament rules...

AD&D 1E Snarf's Challenge: Was it Possible to Play 1e RAW? SHARE YOUR STORIES!

Yes, that. There is so freaking much. The spell commentary in the DMG (mostly gotyas) that most people never saw. The whole Elves can't be raised from the dead was only in the DMG. Gygax was very heavy into info hiding. I think Hackmaster was the game he wanted. His approach caused Player...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I met Gary Gygax once, he was a naughty word. I could but note how tournament play twisted the game from even the rules as written. The RPGA had a whole list of things you could do in the game, but not in tournament play. Rules to deal with collective dungeon crawling, and who got what. The...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I met Gygax once. He was an naughty word. You cannot standardize RPGs. You can do that for chess, even Monopoly. The games are played inside a given box. RPGs by definition have no box. They tried again with The RPG society what ever it was called (I don't remember,), and Pathfinder with their...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I did see that, that cover is noteworthy. I was likely too broke to buy it. The main thing miss about 1977 is my youth. What 0e nurtured was the very Old School method of rulings not rules. You had to make it up as you went because there was no there there, Gygax was trying to rein that in...

AD&D 1E Snarf's Challenge: Was it Possible to Play 1e RAW? SHARE YOUR STORIES!

Pretty much skipping the whole thread. Was it possible? Well, yes. If you picked up the rules in a vacuum what else would you do? Was it done? No one played in a vacuum. You came from 0e, you joined such a group. You were influenced by Dragon Mag, or the guys at the game store, etc.. So I...

TSR On the Relative Merits of the TSR Editions

Nope, that is when the quality slipped. I did not buy the core books again, but I do have plenty of the supplements. The core books came my way in various methods. Down in the spare book shelves.
