AD&D 1E Snarf's Challenge: Was it Possible to Play 1e RAW? SHARE YOUR STORIES!

So, unless you and your players are obsessive OCD types with eidetic memories, you cannot play AD&D RAW.
Or you were a kid in school who spent every class reading the DMG book instead of the textbooks from that class you were supposed to be reading...

whistles innocently....

I may not have remembered all the signers of the Declaration of Independence, or the capitols of every state, but I pretty much had the 1e rulebooks memorized :P

Did you play with the variable number of delayed segments between drinking and when a potion took effect?

From 1981 to 2014 when 1e was my main edition I played? No. But we did in the aforementioned game earlier in the thread. Not gonna lie, from almost the start in 1981, we saw the rules and after about 5 minutes of trying to implement them in the game, they got shelved. I don't think my experience is unique in that regard.

If you are using the Weapon Vs. Armor type rules I would strongly suggest getting yourself a combat wheel
These were in a Dragon Magazine back in the day

I handled this by instead of having a fighter combat matrix or a thief combat matrix, I clipped a "Bob" combat matrix and a "Mike" combat matrix to my DMs screen with their to-hit versus AC with their commonly used weapons precalculated for their level, strength, degree of proficiency, and magical bonuses already built in. This actually turned out greatly speed combat compared to having them roll a dice and perform 3 or 4 math steps before reporting the number.
