Oh absolutely. There were a lot of things going wrong at that time that contributed to TSR's failure. I just focused in on the glut as it felt most relevant to this thread but most assuredly there was more to it than "Arg! Too....many....settings....factionalization....blarg!" ;)

Oh definitely, it was a lot more than just too many settings....but, the biggest lesson was that it factionalized their consumers. Even here, now, you can see it. I, like many, detest crossing the streams (the MtG settings in D&D, etc)....but others love it. So the same factionalization...

I think they're (WotC) still very much aware of the 2e glut and its consequences and trying to keep that learned lesson very much in mind. That's sheer speculation on my part of course. They may simply be gun-shy (still) because of it, even if the market could likely support a new setting...

The original AD&D 2e branding (not the latter flat red one) has that very effect on me. I see it and....man, the memories come flooding in.

I'd probably start with said archmage really noticing that the PCs are gunning for him, and taking a far more personal interest in stopping them. Not confronting them himself per se, but certainly begin sending "strikes" at them (an assassin or two, summoned minions, a small commando strike...

Aaaaand gonna yoink that idea for my game. Much obliged (though going to tinker it down to 1d4 per plus....since I like to save d6's for things like elemental, force, necrotic, etc). I do miss the bonus/hindrance element of D&D. Gave the game a different flavour that I do miss. Still enjoy...

There were some that were that were incompatible, others that were, and ALL used the 2e core (I'm speaking of the 2e glut). Ultimately it seems we will disagree, and I'm good with that. I'm just finding it interesting to see the genesis of history (potentially) repeat itself.

Having lived through the settings glut of 2e, I'm generally very much against new settings from WotC. The biggest argument being, you factionalize the player (consumer) base, such that they will only buy product geared toward their preferred setting and not buy the stuff that isn't. I mean...

Ditch the Ranger as a class and present multiple subclasses. Barbarian (Ranger) - No spellcasting, concept is survivalist, nomadic, adaptable (unique fighting style available only to them, terrain-specific combat abilities....or alters Rage benefits to align with terrain/local fauna). Druid...
