What TTRPGs have the best tactical combat rules?

I'm surprised DnD, especially 5e makes the list. I hear lots of good things about Lancer though. Dissatisfaction with DnD is why we specifically designed Interstellar Mercenary (www.ismrpg.com) system - to provide tactical options for players with a progressive system that allows GMs to add...

Beautiful New Art for my Alien World!

Got to share some of the amazing art helping to bring the alien world of Interstellar Mercenary to life. This artist (@maxsuleimanov) is really capturing the briefing perfectly. A trugan homestead built into an old xoslate hive and a se'arid temple: Follow the campaign coming soon to...

D&D General Love DnD, then check this out!

Over 30 years ago I had an hour game of a Basic DnD homebrew with my uncle. I then went on to spend the next 30 years building a world and rules with my group to design a game which gave us: interesting creatures to play (I never wanted to be human(ish)); dynamic team-based play with hidden...

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

I like the idea of exploring the question you pose. Perhaps for another thread but hearing about ideas and concepts that give death meaning but without some of the problems. Thanks for the thoughts.

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

Only relevant question I asked on rpggeek related to whether technical combat systems were still of interest to GMs/players. Nothing to do with difficulty of surviving in the game. What exactly are you referring to?

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

Hmmmm, not sure what the false dichotomy is? You can make assumptions into my questions (the two general ends of the spectrum) but at no time did I think or suggest there are only two options, hence the open question at the end. Its just a general request for opinions on whether modern players...

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

Its not flawed, it's asking a particular question about 'challenge,' that challenge is keeping a PC alive, and whether players want that challenge. Of course there are other things that can challenge players in a game but this was not what I was interested in asking about. I specifically want to...

MCDM's New Tactical TTRPG Hits $1M Crowdfunding On First Day!

I'm really happy to see someone take on the D&D beast and MCDM seem to be the ones with enough audience to do it. Very surprised to see how much support this essentially untested RPG is getting with no play content and rules that just don't seem that innovative. Very surprised. So many...

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

I'm definitely not talking about scripted death in the OP. I'd also be surprised if players want a guaranteed death too. I think game sessions, for the most part, are enhanced by players knowing there is a chance of death. I doubt players ever want to die but surely they want to be challenged...

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

Excellent, I hope there are enough out there that do. I'm going to start advertising my game soon and I am concerned that talking about it's challenging nature might be viewed as a negative. Interstellar Mercenary is tough! Mod Edit: Advertising link removed. ~Umbran

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

Well point. I agree, death isn't the only way to fail or create peril in a game. Agency, feeling like you can change the world, have meaningful interactions are more important for sure but I think a sense of mortality helps enhance all of that. It should matter if a character dies.

Good to hear, that's how I hope my players feel!

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

I like that, whilst I've asked generally, I may formally have them vote on it before next campaign.

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

Fortunately we have an online character generator which makes characters is a few minutes but back when it took us an hour to make one it was even more devastating when a character dies. These days most of my regular players have a few characters pre-made so they can jump back in at the next...

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

My game (InterStellar Mercenary) is difficult. Trying to complete a mission while being hunted down by bounty hunters, deadly creatures, the enemy empire, and your fellow mercenary means there is a high chance of death. In a campaign (10 missions) I probably average about 50% die. Whilst my...
