Level Up (A5E) Worldbuilding: Your character, your world, your way

From how you described it, it feels like Home, Common Species, Culture and to a lesser extent, History, would be the categories to spend more time on? (How X met others is something that'd work better when you're with the other players.)

D&D General Combat as War vs. Sport and a Missing Third Mode

One thing to keep in mind is there are long traditions everywhere for what is described above e.g. in wu xia novels and their derivatives, combat is about this. Oral stories about different gods/goddesses, heroes/heroines etc. carry these elements. Think of The Iliad! And in cultures where...

Systems that actualy emulate Western movies?

Yes, the implied setting isn't; my underlying thought for suggesting was it being a Borg (therefore light & modular), characters generated from it + fight rules can be placed easily into a setting the OP wants.

Playing "storygames": Mobile Frame Zero - Firebrands; and Showdown

Both of these were great reads. I have to say from this Afterword, that on a surface level there isn't collaboration, but collaboration absolutely occurred between you both! It was a sad irony to read the author exhorts participants to "...respect your opponent...by playing generously," yet...

Systems that actualy emulate Western movies?

Two suggestions come immediately to mind; they're both pretty different: Tales of the Old West (Year Zero Engine) Frontier Scum (Borg inspired)

    What's your current campaign about?

Presently Running: Dragon Heist (a5e/D&D 2014, 2025): Alexandrian (remix) structure; added The Curse of Trollskull Manor to Chapter 2, replaced Dragon Heist faction missions with individual, converted modules. PCs have retrieved the Stone and possess one eye. Brindlewood Bay (Carved from...

    Comparing Modern Gear to Historical

Someone was kind enough to link this elsewhere, I thought it'd be of interest for players, GMs, and aspiring game designers when considering the role of gear (in your game) and adjudicating situations: How the Turner Twins are Mythbusting Modern Gear

    Why I Hate Skills

This likely won't handle all of the issues you mention in your original post, but I recently watched this video by John Harper. While it specifically was done to help D&D GMs with the BitD playloop, I found when I used this scaffolding on occasion for presenting situations, I got much less "I...

D&D General Reworking movement and positioning

Initial thoughts. I don't know if these changes play well with your intention (being in close against multiple opponents = more dangerous, avoiding bogging down in play). There's ofc the fictional position that everyone in the scrum is focused on someone or something different, happens often...

Vampire the Masquerade: Love the setting but not the system

You could peek at ShadowCity: Blood and Neon (Chubby Funster). It approaches V:tM, gazing towards OSR (Shadowdark), with a domain overlay that creates an experience similar to what you might find in the GTA series or similar. Relatively easy to find video read throughs etc. You could keep a lot...

RPG Evolution: Why Paper Beats Pixels

Commenting to highlight a few of Arilyn's points; there's something intrinsic when you pick up a physical book, open it up and use it, just like it is when you make the choice to take notes by hand with a pen or pencil, try your hand at standee drawing, or attempt to draw a map on graph paper...

    D&D 5E (2014) DC in DnD: Superman

I would consider a high damage reduction of some kind; I have the same sentiment as Morrus in this regard (Doomsday isn't the only DC character that has straight up pummeled Superman). I'd switch Int/Wis, or at least lower Wis. Superman is very intelligent and comes from an advanced...

D&D 5E (2014) Your CR limit for an average 1st level party?

Like Zardnaar + few others, I think CR 2 (or broken up among several monsters) is prudent; like a white room & PCs as you described. I could see CR 3, but if I were putting something like this together, I'd advocate for some environment/feature that could be leveraged by PCs to their benefit.

    D&D 5E (2024) Unfreezing the Narrative

In my campaign, this was resolved by switching to a variation of side initiative. My table doesn't play a lot with the weapon tags.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Is Now OFFICIALLY Called "5.5e"

Briefly places editor hat on: Morrus doesn't mention this here, but what is an exterior change on the cover also affects content in your project e.g. how you may reference the 2024 rules inside. Also, it's not like prior published titles magically update themselves!

    Free League Announces Dragonbane: Trudvang

Small post to mention this is def. getting a lot of word-of-mouth elsewhere now, more so than with other recent releases by Free League. The two comments I've come across most as to why there's much chatter is : a) the art, b) it's a dedicated setting that harps strongly on particular feels...

D&D General D&D Fan Expo: London Main Show Is Coming This August

I like the cast lineup... should be good given the combination; happy to see Wyll is there along with the rest! Want to express mild disappointment that some of the other actors from BG3 tend to not be brought in as frequently at these larger events that have live play (Halsin, Narrator...

D&D General What do you do for housing?

My modest experience with this is that housing (whatever shape it takes) tends to be engaged with more when: Obvious benefits are clear e.g. rather than paying 50 gp each time to utilize your neighbor's Library to take a Research action, you build your book collection and construct your own...
