D&D General When Was it Decided Fighters Should Suck at Everything but Combat?

I would be happy for fighters to not be crippled from doing anything else.

But let there be choices. 3e as written removes them, AD&D doesn't have them to start with. Other editions vary to be sure. There is no reason the fighter must be Sir Feudalmind.

Building Fighters in 3e I find that you have more feats available than usable combat feats. You might as well diversify. Other classes have too few.

But a PC with a singular purposes is truly limiting. I should be able to pump INT and have a large array of knowledge skills. Frankly no skill should be harder to get than any other. OK my fighter spends his down time doing the necessary working out, but you can't do that all day. So he digs...

Fighters never get the knowledge to know interesting things. :devilish:

Is the knowledge dramatically critical? If so a roll if not I don't care.

Am I weird or is that part of the fun? That is a fair point, Buy a color laser printer and pay a Hell of a lot less for better quality. Oh, and if it sits for three months toner doesn't dry up. I can do that in print as well. It doesn't do a tablet much good, and the book is cheaper...

Old eyes son. I need big screens. First Principle: Files not on your computer are not your files. Look up "Topica" in an idle moment for an example, or "Megauploads" for a more recent one. In short honest users that trusted "the cloud" lost all their data. You can have them online, but...

Sea voyages follow the old saw of days of tedium followed by moments of terror. You can cross a whole ocean and never encounter anything. A single storm can cause you to question your life choices. It's in coastal waters you find things like pirates and shoals. I'll dismissed 3000 miles of...

Desk Top Publishing, I write to print. I am old school, I don't like a sea of laptops obscuring the view of the other players. I will admit that if not gaming at home a tablet full of pdf files beats moving a small library.

Have we wandered away from the topic? You know, fighters not sucking at everything else, not universally being Sir Feudalmind. 🐯 (This forum has the largest set of smilies I have every seen.)

I do. It is a preference, some people don't like. But for those that so, I have options. I started with 0e played all the way up to 3e. So I know by D&D systems. My current game is the result of what we like.

Basic GM Rules 4: The Rule of Yes A) Unless there is a compelling reason to say no, say yes. Playing a game with Dr. No isn't any fun. Players want to have fun and to do things. There is a time and place for obstacles, learn and know that time and place. Trying to find a royal blue...

Some skills just need training. I have never heard an unskilled person get a tune out of a violin. (I have one, I know). You either can swim, or you can't. All the skills in my list are noted as whether you can use them untrained. Oh and sailing? I wouldn't do it without lessons. I've been...

Time for second breakfast. The problem with mentions at the table is I don't recall them later to fix. We work with physical copies of the books. I'm a DTP nerd. Good printer, book binder, etc. And even with other peoples' work I'm a poor proofreader, after a page it all blurs together,

I do not have the Tolkien estate breathing down my neck. I'll look at it. I do not have a proofreader. You were right, I fixed it. It will take a little longer to trickle down to the website.

That depend entirely on who you talk to. I say no. I find the Pathfinder power creep too much. But I do not have to have Humans as the golden child. I'm good with balanced races no one ahead, and no one crippled to put someone ahead. D&D/AD&D has a strong thread of racism in it. Something...

Some yes. You either can swim, or you don't is a good example. No one gets to craft a sword with their bare hands. (Except Fullautomatix)

So give Humans more. Give them bonus feats. A +2 plus in perception (or spot search) because Humans are the pattren reconition masters. Give it to them every other round. A roll for adrenaline boost. +7 to strength. for length of combat. Also they get 2d10 temporary hit points. Ignore...
