A nice little video on shield sizes

I can't seem to embed a YouTube short, so here's the URL: What’s the point of a tiny shield? The presenter briefly explains why shields are different sizes. And moots dual-wielding shields.

    Semi-sensible thousand-year plans?

Some things in RPGs are often very long-lived. What sort of very-long-term plans and efforts might they have? At one end, in Shadow World, Lorgalis has a tower continually built up over thousands of years by the secretions of snails; at the other, in Dune, the Bene Gesserit (granted that that's...

D&D (2024) How would you use studded leather wraps on polearms in 5.5E?

Studded leather is a real thing, but for wrapping polearms, and not as armour. What uses would you give it in today's game? I'm thinking that it might give a bonus or even Advantage vs Disarm at the cost of extra expense. 5E doesn't have a Sunder option, but additional resilience there seems...

D&D (2024) Weapon Mastery Cleave - what can you add to the cleave damage die roll

The text says you cannot add your stat bonus unless it's negative, but what can you add? The weapon's plus? The weapon's special property damage (bane, flaming, thunder, etc)? Sneak Attack (or similar) dice? Radiant damage from Paladin?

Why a rapier is bad for an adventurer

TLDW: adventurers (vice military in the video) are more likely to choose a broadsword over a rapier because the rapier has big issues vs multiple opponents and is less likely to break. And three other reasons.

D&D (2024) How does the 2024 Fighter compare to other fighting classes?

How does the Fighter compare with the Paladin, Ranger, and Barbarian for damage-dealing and general combat? I'm looking at 3rd and 11th levels in particular. Do you still have to use Action Surge to make up the damage difference? How are weapon masteries affecting combat? And I see that the...

D&D (2024) Ranger: is Horde Breaker a bit too good for level 3?

PHB p.127 ISTM that Horde Breaker could give a level 3 Hunter Ranger four attacks per round - two on their Action and two on their Reaction. That seems a little too good to me. What do you think?

I found real studded leather in the Wallace Collection

But it's not studded leather armour for a person; it's a protective leather binding on a spear. It's in the far corner of the Indian / Persian hall. Object 2196 FWIW

D&D 5E Should the Flail be a Simple Melee Weapon?

The flail is, of course, an agricultural implement so I'm wondering why it's listed as a Martial Weapon in the PHB. Perhaps reducing the damage to 1d6. And how about adding a Great Flail, a two-handed Simple Melee Weapon doing 1d10 bludgeoning, ignores shields, and usable with the Polearm...

D&D 5E Monsters that attack stats

I don't have my 5E MM to hand and my curiosity has been piqued. Shadows damage Str and Intellect Devourers damage Int, but what about the other stats?

    15th century polearms and sidearms

A video I found interesting, particularly the polearm segment.

D&D 5E Has anyone tried or theorycrafted a Joe / Jane average party?

The idea: everyone starts with a 10 in all their stats. Now apply racial modifiers (variant human allowed). That's your starting PC. Then pick class, skills, background, etc. As you gain levels you may pick feats or stat increases as normal. How about starting with 11 in all stats? Has anyone...

D&D 5E How powerful is substituting Proficiency Bonus for ability modifier?

I'm thinking along the lines of the Battlemaster Fighter or Monk here. Call it the Disciplined Warrior. At some point, perhaps instead of getting Indomitable, the Fighter gets the ability to substitute their Proficiency Bonus for any ability modifier 1 or 2 per Short Rest, at will and for one...

D&D 5E Great Weapon Master: how about -5 AC instead of -5 to hit?

I've just been watching a Matt Easton video about poleaxes and he makes the point that if you make a power blow you leave yourself open. Especially if you miss. In D&D terms this would be equivalent to giving opponents Advantage or -5 AC. I think in this case that -5 AC is much more...

D&D 5E How does that Fighter, Barbarian or Rogue become king? Bring on the Feat

It's classic Conan, going from vagabond to king. And it happened in real life too. But take a look at the typical Fighter, Barbarian, and Rogue: one or more of Int, Wis, and Cha are dump stats. Sure you can take the Skilled Feat, but as a king you're taking important decisions and trying to...

    D&D 5E The War Flail in 5E

How would you model the war flail in D&D? I'm thinking d10 or d12 damage (because, you know, the damage is swingy), Reach, Bludgeoning or Piercing damage (depending upon whether the flail is spiked or not) and eligible for the Polearm Mastery feat.

    D&D 5E Darts - and D&D

Tod Cutler (weapon-maker) and Matt Easton (HEMA tutor) are playing with darts. So, 1d3 + Str for the small ones (plumbata), d4 for the medium ones, and d6 for the big ones? And roll damage with Disadvantage if the target wears metal armour?
