    Any 3.0 diehards out there?

I wouldn't call myself a die hard But we have for the most part stayed with 3.0 rules. I didn't see much mechanics changes with the 3.5 rules, and what did change was annoying. We do play with the updated classes and skills, but other than that it is 3.0 all the way.

Assassins: Just Plain Evil or Misunderstood?

I'm not trying to pass judgment, just trying to pass on how soldiers felt about the snipers. There was something different about being a sniper and being just another soldier in the trench.

Assassins: Just Plain Evil or Misunderstood?

Assasins = evil I think that the assasin class is evil, and probably should be evil. There really isn't a way to view taking money to kill someone as a profession as anything but evil. That is to say, I can't come up with a context where it is not a crime to accept payment for killing another...

Sell me on your low magic grim and gritty (LM/GnG) homebrew

Greyhawk Supersized Core concept: All beings are pure magic that have manifested in physical form and have lots and lots of magic abilities. Characters take the form of Gestault versions of clerics, wizards and Psions. To balance this all fighters start out with at least 100,000 gp worth...

    Anyone successfully played a non-humanoid in D20?

We are hoping at some point to get in an Uplift game, which would hopefully include non-humanoids. In our game the only non-human is a thri-kreen, which doesn't have very many of the non-human drawbacks that would prevent it from being played

Do you feel cheated if an encounter isn't hard?

Depends on the group It depends a lot on the group. I've seen some where the players didn't mind light strength encounters and some where they wanted every room filled with deadly encounters and the dungeon was like an in take valve for player death. What I find as GM and as player is that...

Help a Newb DM on setting the mood

Down and distance information very useful What I try to do with my descriptions is give the players a sense of how far away the danger is, how much of a threat it could be to the players, what kind of threat it could pose to them, and the relative cover and disadvantages the players are...

    DMs and the Sorcerer class

I've noticed this as well. I think it allows the GM to use anything they want out of the magic book without having to worry about the consequences of that same spell being hurled back at the NPC. This is also echoed in the use of bizare prestige classes to give powers to NPC's instead of using...

    Is D&D too complicated?

I never got that either, or why the new system is so much better. It is exactly the same system except now you add instead of subtract from 10.

    Is D&D too complicated?

But in the quest for this goal, the game tries to codify situations that are by their very nature always going to be GM wing it decisions. The arbitrarty nature of GM decisions is alive and kicking in 3E. From setting the DC's for a bluff check to deciding what is really a challenging combat...

    Probabilities for opposed skill checks

Easier on you, but much harder on the players. Essentially you are saying that the NPC always takes 10 on their check. Say the player and the defender have the same skill level then you are saying that you want the skill to fail over 50% of the time. That is pretty harsh.

    So I led a mutiny...

There was another way to deal with this Instead of killing the NPC, you could just say from now on you refuse to take on NPC's as part of the adventure. When they say they won't hire you unless you take on their NPC, say, "Sorry to hear that, but I guess you can solve your own problems", and...

    Probabilities for opposed skill checks

Column 1) Advantage for Player Basically if the player has a 7 enemy 3 the advantage is 4 Column 2) Number of times the Player would win, (win implies having a combined number 1 greater than the enemy. IE if enemy rolls a combined 15 and the player rolls a combined 16 this is a one point...

    Is D&D too complicated?

Nice post, I think this summerizes what I believe as well. The main problem I have is that I find the rules in 3E much harder to improvise around than in previous additions. This is because every ability and rule is so intertwined that it is really hard to start hacking off the parts of the...

Hit points: High side, average, straight roll, what?

Our group has been rolling against GM for hit points for close to 20 years now. For those unfamilar, the GM and the player each roll a die and the player gets the better of the two rolls. Tends to pump up hit points, especially for the fighter types, but it keeps you from creating the really...

    Is D&D too complicated?

It isn't that they are too complicated, its that they are on a quixotic quest to be perfect and handle everything and it makes the rules verbose and pedantic. At some level more detail becomes less helpful. When I have to keep track of 8 billion things just to play one monster against one...

How do I meet "mature" gamers?

Make sure you clearly state what age group and life style (IE not into anime porn) in your posts at the local gaming store. Just like you would never venture into a strange game with a bunch of slack jawed teen agers, most people in your predicament view those posts with quite a suspect eye...

    New continuity rule

I did this in one campaign where we had way more players than spots at the tables. We all had hectic schedules so we couldn't show up to every game anyway. So, we built an organization that all the PC's could belong to, and whoever showed up gamed that week. It worked great for that campaign.
