My Big Beef With the LOTR movies

I hated: 1) the way Galadriel came off as such a witch (IMO) 2) the heavy-handed, cheap attempts at manipulating the audience by repeatedly showing babies crying, 'peasants' weeping, etc. as though we're too stupid to get it the first time, thus breaking up the rhythm of action scenes (eg...

Grr. Return of the King makes me angry.

I don't think Amal had an issue with 'Content' - the basic elements were all there. The issue was with the 'Presentation' and 'Execution' of said 'Content' ;)

Grr. Return of the King makes me angry.

Personally, even in the books the Scouring always seemed like 'another' story -- an unnecessary addendum, as though a short story was somehow grafted on to the end ..

Grr. Return of the King makes me angry.

Although I do agree with you, I think you also need to consider the author's intent -- what the author intended to be important -- and if it can be argued that there is something resembling a Truth-with-a-capital-T, then surely it would be that intent .. With respect to the film - any...

Grr. Return of the King makes me angry.

Thank you Amal Shukup - you have made my day :D <weeping>That such true words of power could come from a fellow Torontonian is more than I could ever have hoped for .. </weeping>

Whats the worst you've ever read? Scifi/Fanstasy

Bah!! Trilogies are too short! I think the best strategy is to write one book, and then stretch it out indefinitely into a "series". ;) :D

New Return of the King EE DVD trailer online

I don't know if this happened where you guys are, but here in Toronto, a week before the theatrical release of ROTK, they had FOTR and TTT extended editions at some of the theatres - not back to back on one day, but rather on back to back days :D Needless to say I went a few times each :D

    First Fantasy Novel/Series You Read?

Lloyd Alexander's Taran series, followed by the Hobbit and LOTR. Somewhere in there was L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, but definitely Taran first :D If there hadn't been Taran the assistant pig keeper, would we still have Garion and Rand? :D

    What is the Malazan series?

Erikson's MBOTF is truly amazing and well worth the effort. I recommend it to everyone, because in the end what's their to lose? BTW Dakkareth, you did an equally amazing job describing the series ;)

    Steven Eriksons Malazan series

You only have to look at the artwork from our own past to realize that what we would call 'big' or 'fat' women were at one time greatly admired ;)

    Steven Eriksons Malazan series

I too have heard this on more than one occasion, but the people who say this never really elaborate ... what is it about his depictions that seem flawed to you? Can you provide an example of a writer/book/character that would be an example of 'good' female characterization? Personally I find...

    Steven Eriksons Malazan series

Thanks :) Regarding House of Chains: I think of the four books up to that point, HOC was the weakest. Pacing/flow was a bit off compared to the previous novels. I particularly was not crazy about Karsa Orlong -- didn't hate him, just found him a little annoying. I think if I had...

    Steven Eriksons Malazan series

I think "all" the UK covers are great; I also hope that Tor sticks with using them for the rest of the series. Barring that they should just pick one artist and stick with him/her, rather than flip-flopping all over the place with different artists/styles with each title - there should be some...
