Level Up (A5E) What’s up with the Arcane and Divine spell schools?

I was also confused by the tags when I read the Herald class, but then I forgot about them. They did seem a bit random. I prefer an uncluttered design space, but I appreciate that is no easy thing to accomplish when you have a couple of dozen designers working in their spare time to produce an...

Level Up (A5E) Feats at Level 1

I think that is something that has been generally well handled in A5e, and not just with the multi-classing feats. Looking at old multiclassed characters from 3.5e and 5e, my A5e conversions actually use fewer classes. I think that is down to 2 reasons. 1. A lot of my multi-classing happens...

Level Up (A5E) Feats at Level 1

Feats seem to me to be a bit vestigial in A5e. Sure, there are some interesting new options, but considering how much is now handled via heritage, culture, class and archetype, feats feel a bit like an extra add-on to an already crowded character sheet.

Level Up (A5E) Question - Expertise and Proficiency

It's certainly unusual. But I was only using it to illustrate how the system works according to RAW. There has been quite a bit of misunderstanding over this matter, spread over two threads.

Level Up (A5E) Engineering and Culture - skill discussion

Agreed - to get extra tools, musical instruments etc in this manner, you would have to have zero knowledge skill proficiencies. The RAW seems clear, and I think I can see the reasoning behind it, even if there seem to be one or two unintended consequences.

Level Up (A5E) Question - Expertise and Proficiency

That seems like a simple and eminently sensible solution.

Level Up (A5E) Question - Expertise and Proficiency

I agree there are issues. I suspect the designers thought that giving up to five extra skill proficiencies to a high int wizard was too much, and would step on the bard's toes. The idea of giving specialisations instead meant that the wizard could still be a font of knowledge, but in a more...

Level Up (A5E) Question - Expertise and Proficiency

During character creation, for each point of your Intelligence modifier above 0 you can choose a skill specialty in one of the following skills (covered in detail page 408): Arcana, Culture, Engineering, History, Nature, Religion. If you are not proficient in any of these skills you can gain...

Level Up (A5E) Question - Expertise and Proficiency

People will need to ensure that they build their characters in a certain way (e.g. no knowledge skills from heritage, background or class) if they want to use bonus int to choose a skill, tool or language. Otherwise, the RAW requires that they use bonus int to take specialisations only. Level...

Level Up (A5E) Engineering and Culture - skill discussion

That's a fair point. It's the sort of thing that sometimes happens in real life. It just isn't supported by the RAW.

    Level Up (A5E) Rogue Questions/Errors

I agree these are all problems. I have reported the Aim error already, as well as a couple of instances where Rogue archetypes grant proficiency with thieves' tools, which all Rogues automatically get. If you haven't already, these need to be reported using the Google Form.

Level Up (A5E) Engineering and Culture - skill discussion

Ah, now that's interesting. You and I have interpreted the text differently here - although I am really hoping that you are right. Bold emphahsis is mine. During character creation, for each point of your Intelligence modifier above 0 you can choose a skill specialty in one of the following...

Level Up (A5E) Engineering and Culture - skill discussion

Hi everyone, I've noticed that very few classes get the new skills (Engineering and Culture) on their list of proficiencies. Only three classes include either skill. Bards: All skills, including Culture and Engineering Cleric: Culture Rogue: Culture and Engineering Was this intentional...

    Blog (A5E) Character Origins: Backgrounds

I love the adventure hooks, the well-thought out tweaks to the O5e background system, and the general increase in flexibility. Probably my favourite preview so far.

Level Up (A5E) A full list of combat maneuvers

Looking at this list (which is awesome, by the way), it reads like a list of 3e feats. And I've been thinking - with spells and maneuvers providing optional combat abilities, and exploration knacks (and other spells) taking care of the exploration side of things, and various class features...

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to clarify.

Level Up (A5E) Level Up Class Preview: Adept

Focus Features are defintely reminiscent of Warlock invocations - that's exactly what I thought when I saw them. So Maneuvers/Focus Features for Adepts are like Spells/Invocations for Warlocks. But then we have these Practised Techniques as well. After I made my first post, I thought that...

Level Up (A5E) Level Up Class Preview: Adept

There is indeed a lot going on here. We already have Maneuvers for most classes, and Adepts also get Focus Features and Practised Techniques. What is the difference between these things? Agreed, and if that change is made then we have a clear (though it is not made explicit in the text)...

    Spell Focus

    Crazy isn't it? I'm house-ruling it to Str 13.

    Fourth Edition just feels... incomplete

Personally, I liked the fact that players didn't have automatic access to the magic item descriptions. It helped preserve the mystery of said items. Especially in 1/2E, it was always possible to have the DM simply tell you what your items did when you found them. Given the fact that 4E was...
