Mass Effect is a shooter-RPG hybrid. In mass effect 1 the hybrid is a misshapen monstrosity; in 2 and 3 they went more for a straight shooter (with rpg elements) and the gameplay benefitted immensely. Trying to jam anything into a single box these days is a fool’s errand.

A more-or-less faithful translation of Necromunda as a turn-based tactics game would be amazing.

That can be a rough fight, your opponents have a couple of nasty special abilities and can deal a lot of damage in a short time. Depending on your choices so far, you may be able to talk a couple of them onto your side, which does help quite a bit.

Interesting. I recently forced my wife to watch B5 and was worried she’d hate it, but she rather loved it, even without my thick nostalgia goggles. Held up much better than I expected (though we decided to skip Season 5, barring the finale).

I’m hardly an aRPG aficionado, but I always liked Diablo 1 for this reason. It’s very bite-sized; easy to pick up and put down, even if it’s a bit more primitive than its descendants.

Again, I appreciate the attempt but as I also don’t play jRPGs then this is all Greek (or possibly Japanese) to me. I think this is probably the smart move. With all the rave reviews I feel I should give it a go but maybe not at full price.

So many people are raving about this I feel like I’d better give it a go. But I like my turn-based combat XCOM-style, not jRPG style. And quick-time events sound terrible to me: quick is the opposite of what I want. On the other hand, Torment had garbage combat, and I loved that.

Lack of the ability to save whenever I want is an absolute dealbreaker, artistic vision be damned. Unless Miyazaki (or whichever auteur) is willing to provide childcare, I’m afraid it’s a no sale. Fortunately, my preferred genres, cRPG and turn-based tactics, tend to have flexible save systems...

I love the grimy industrial look of the OT, and absolutely hated the shiny retrofuturism of the Prequels. In addition, the transition between the two feels totally inorganic (and some of the hybrid designs are truly hideous). The Sequels’ unambitious update on the OT designs was a much better move.
