    OotS 889

I see Elan using his primary strength (his knowledge of meta-fictional narrative) overcoming his primary weakness (his naiveté) as a classic example of character growth.

    3 weeks till new Who!

The finale really makes me think that this half-season was a disservice for the character of Clara. There could have been so many interesting ways to foreshadow Clara more and give her some full characterization. I could have seen them being really cute and having each episode a call back to a...

    OotS 889

It showed some character growth on behalf of Elan. His greatest, deepest wish, and his realization that the real world doesn't work that way. It has some small plot value (shows the strengths of the pyramid's illusions), has a little thematic value (this is what heroes are all about), and shows...

    3 weeks till new Who!

I thought "The Snowmen" was the backdoor pilot for the Victorian Three?

    3 weeks till new Who!

I almost wish that the Doctor was down and out for the count to have made this a full Doctor-less episode. There would have been a lot of interesting drama and dialogue between the Victorian Three and Clara, and it would have given these other characters a little more focus and screentime.

    Science Fiction vs. Science Fantasy

I submitted a urban fantasy short story ages ago to Marion Zimmer Bradley magazine, and it was rejected because it was "too much like science fiction" since it followed too closely to physical laws. So I guess a box of endless toys that eats children is science fiction.

[MHR] Marvel RPG Discontinued, PDF sales ending next week

Honestly, I prefer the pre-gens. I figure I'm playing a Marvel game to be a Marvel character.

[MHR] Marvel RPG Discontinued, PDF sales ending next week

I would have preferred not events but "genres" or themes. A Cosmic book would have space stuff, the appropriate villains and heroes, and ways to run Cosmic stories and such. A Mutant book would have X-Men, the racial/political stuff, and ways to run those kinds of stories. That way not only...

[MHR] Marvel RPG Discontinued, PDF sales ending next week

Based on no legal knowledge or experience whatsoever, I would also guess licensing issues, especially if they are discontinuing the pdfs. Welp, there goes my gaming budget for the month!

[MHR] Marvel RPG Discontinued, PDF sales ending next week

What I'm confused about is which pdfs are available. Is the Annihilation pdf avail? What about the other Civil War supplements?

    3 weeks till new Who!

MarkB, I agree completely. That's pretty much what I meant/said when I enjoyed the episode up until the rescue, and then from then on it was really clunky.

    3 weeks till new Who!

I have to admit that I was confused by the sequence in question. The ending was very compressed with a lot of visual and textual information, and I heard in paraphrase, "This terrible thing will happen if we enter the pocket dimension." And then Clara entered the pocket dimension and the...

    3 weeks till new Who!

No comment on the cinematography? I thought the direction was incredible. I hope they bring back the director on another episode. I too liked it. The plot holes didn't destroy the plot for me. The only thing was the reveal of the intelligence behind the plot was so soft it was a pillow. I'm...

    3 weeks till new Who!

Steven Moffat's strengths lie in a really strong ability to experiment and play with time as a storytelling device. Girl in the Fireplace, Silence in the Library two parter, Christmas Carol are some strong examples. He also has an incredible ability to tap into the human psyche to invent some...

    Spreading the Cant

I personally don't get the hate (or maybe I do, I just don't want to give up the argument for its use) for the Cant. It's no different than Kubrick/Burgess's "A Clockwork Orange" and its Nadsat, or Welsh's novel Trainspotting with its phonetic English with Scottish accent.

Roleplaying since the 80s and I'm really tired!

I'm a big fan of trying out new systems and new games, even (or especially) the weird, quirky, indie/story/small press/whatever-you-want-call-not-D&D games. Even the ones that I end up not liking, because you still learn a lot from a game, system, or setting you don't like.

So, who wants to talk about new Doctor Who (spoilers likely)

Then "Blink" was a rip-off too. It was based on a short story by Moffatt in Doctor Who magazine about a girl named Sally Sparrow who found a videotape from her in the future to her in the present (had no Weeping Angels though. It was definitely a kid's piece).

So, who wants to talk about new Doctor Who (spoilers likely)

Well, to be fair, Gatiss, Moffatt, and Cornell, who have written for the novelizations, did create/develop Bernice Summerfield, so I can see bits of those ideas in River Song. As for rip-off, can you rip-off yourself? I'm guessing that they liked the idea of the character enough that they...

    Revolution

Useless? I thought the brother was so much more active than Charlie was. At least he stood up to the militia and even escaped. All Charlie did was be mad, struggle with her crossbow, and make googly eyes at an enemy. My girl and I found it to be meh. It's a show that hasn't fully committed to...

So, who wants to talk about new Doctor Who (spoilers likely)

Something about this episode was a bit off. I think we needed more screen time with Ben Browder's Sheriff (to really nail down the Doctor's responsibility to him), and we needed another scene (or a meatier scene) between Kahler-Jax and the Doctor (to better illustrate their similarities and...
