D&D General WotC: Novels & Non-5E Lore Are Officially Not Canon

To be honest, I prefer a soft reboot take to bending over backwards to explain why all the iconic characters of the Realms survived a 100+ year time skip. It would have been nice to just say this at the start of 5e, but that probably would have hurt initial sales of the game.

Top 5 Tabletop RPGs Spring 2021: Cyberpunk Gains!

I would bet there are numerous factors at work, including the fact that the company whose business was put in jeopardy during the 4e shift might be gunshy about tying their fortunes to somebody else's gaming line again.

Top 5 Tabletop RPGs Spring 2021: Cyberpunk Gains!

I wouldn't characterize Pathfinder at #3 as a dip, necessarily. More that Cyberpunk got a really nice surge. The industry as a whole is seeing consistent growth, and a video game tie-in must certainly help.

Check Out The Cover of the Upcoming Doctor Who: Second Edition RPG!

I have the first edition but never got a chance to play it. I guess this'll be one of those times where I update before getting a chance to play what's already on my shelf. Streamlined character creation and better TARDIS rules make it very appealing.

TSR Just when you thought it was all over.... now there’s a fourth TSR!

My memories of TSR are mostly tied up with Dave Gross and Chris Perkins, who ran the magazines during the 90s (and I'll feel dumb if I'm misremembering that). They were incredibly patient with the million ridiculous ideas I sent as queries and consistently gave good, constructive feedback. But...

TSR Just when you thought it was all over.... now there’s a fourth TSR!

So Gygax's apology isn't actually an apology, but rather shifting the blame to a mystery person who supposedly ran his social media accounts. He seems unaware that he is on film saying the thing that kicked this off in the first place.

TSR TSR3 Throws In Towel, Rebrands Wonderfilled

Oh, and then things take an even bigger turn on the Giantlands website: "Our team at has collectively been making games for over 200 years! From classic games like 'Dungeons & Dragons' and 'Laser Tag', video games like 'F.E.A.R.', 'Prey', and theme parks like 'Super Nintendo World' and...

TSR TSR3 Throws In Towel, Rebrands Wonderfilled

Has anyone looked at wonderfilled.co? It's a trip. I don't know if my favorite part is the "creative studio" misspelling excellence or if it's the claim that they do "top secret" work for Rovio.

D&D General Win The Title of D&D's Best DM

Not WotC, but just my stab: -You have to use the tools from Xanathar's, but aren't required to purchase the book. If you borrow the book from someone, check it out of a library, or what-have-you, that's fine. -The design has to be unique, so you're not copying other lore/mechanics. But you...

    D&D 5E (2014) New WotC Survey! Learn About A New D&D Product!

I would guess they were looking for a certain number of responses and got that quickly.

    D&D 5E (2014) New WotC Survey! Learn About A New D&D Product!

I didn't get the NDA. However, I do take surveys for companies trying to get feedback on new products, and the language shown in the screenshot is a pretty standard thing that gets asked if the product hasn't been released yet. (Even if the questions are as vague as, "How do you think your cat...

D&D General Win The Title of D&D's Best DM

I've had some of my work collected in that manner. It was paid for when published. I didn't get paid again when it was collected, but that was not expected or required. Everything that happened was above board.

D&D General Win The Title of D&D's Best DM

My rl example of why the basic liability protection is there is that, circa 1999, I submitted a race of humanoids bonded with dragon eggs called the dragonborn for one of WotC's magazines. It got rejected, but a few years later dragonborn popped up in an official book. Was it the same race...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls Dungeons & Dragons 5e interview, 6/26/14

I don't know...if I was in WotC's place, I'd probably want to avoid negative backlash from fans, and the announcement of no more magazines ever would probably meet with a lot of negativity. Better to keep people hyped up about the pending release of a new edition. Hopefully, they'll open up...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mike Mearls Dungeons & Dragons 5e interview, 6/26/14

Man, I hope WotC isn't going to just quietly drop the magazines.

D&D 5E (2014) Are we banking too much on the DMG?

WotC's dislike for aasimar based on what seems to be their name alone makes me sad.

Be honest, how long would it really take you to notice all of this stuff...?

I've played either 3rd edition or Pathfinder for almost 15 years now and still haven't noticed these supposedly broken parts. Either the handful of house rules I use dodges these issues or I run games differently than the way most folks on these forums run them. (Or there's a lot of theoretical...

    D&D 5E (2014) Origin New Edition Panel

Basked on track record, I would say thatthe thing preventing this scenario for WotC is that they can't seem to decide what they want D&D to be. I played Magic in the 90s, then took a 15 year break from the game. While there were some new terms to become familiar with, I was able to jump right...

    D&D 5E (2014) Origin New Edition Panel

This actually brings to mind another benefit I see of the edition model: the fact that I can hop off the treadmill when I'd like. In your World of Warcraft comparison, if I want to get into the game but don't like a bunch of the changes they made, I'm out of luck. In tabletop gaming, if I don't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Origin New Edition Panel

In which case I don't like the idea of re-reading the rules/staying constantly updated on the errata whenever a new change comes out. But I'm probably in the minority on this board that has never kept up on game errata anyway. But house rules aren't going to go away, no matter how frequent the...
