D&D General The Gygaxian Origins of Drow and Some Thought on their Depiction As Villians

World of Warcraft would be an interesting touchpoint for how Drow could be depicted visually. Dark Iron Dwarves (charcoal black skin) are now a playable option that has black, gray, and ashy white skin as options. The first time seeing it, the design was striking in that it still captured the...

D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Moves Forward With Deal With Former Marvel Exec Jeremy Latcham

The biggest challenge in adapting Drizzt to film is that his story would need to be changed heavily (think how MCU changes their characters' backstory). Dark Elf Trilogy - First book or book and a half have no humans. That's problematic. The Crystal Shard - (Very similar to TLotR) - Powerful...

Personally, I hope it's original (and it very well might be, especially based on old leaks). However, you're quote above is a fundamental misunderstanding of how the film business works. They look for anything to potentially boost the popularity of the end product. A character like Drizzt that...

Not sure what point we're trying to make here. It was said that Drizzt stopped being popular 20 years ago... but that book was a NYT & USA Today Best Seller, so we know that isn't true. Does that mean Drizzt is going to headline the movie? Of course not. But to try to claim he isn't the most...

You got me curious, so I looked up Timeless, the book just before the most recent one, and that book says that it was both a New York Times and USA Today best seller.

The issues you're describing hold true for film. Plus, all art has had purple/blue/gray drow for decades. That's what even the fanbase expects.

D&D 5E Is the new setting Icewind Dale?

NWN would have been more profitable. That game was the father of modern-day microtransactions in games. They were selling the new modules, even bringing in other companies to make them. It was a big deal at the time, and every company saw $$$.

I haven't seen any recent numbers, but drow have consistently been one of the most popular D&D villains. Just like how the Spider-Man movies used Green Goblin over and over or Batman used Joker over and over, the studio is going to default want the most popular members of the rogues gallery for...

Hmm... you quoted where I said decades (which is true) and then quoted where I said "past peak popularity." Not sure what your argument is. Also, if I'm not mistaken, aren't those last couple of books about Jarlaxle and Zaknafein? I would guess Drizzt is barely even in them.

@Parmandur got me thinking about those old articles. The one from thathashtagshow said the leads they were after included: Will Smith, Josh Brolin, Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Matthew McConaughey, Jamie Foxx, Joel Edgerton, Dave Bautista, Jeremy Renner and Johnny Depp Now that Jeremy Latcham is...

D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Moves Forward With Deal With Former Marvel Exec Jeremy Latcham

What I find strange is the idea that a character has to be widely known in culture. That's outright false. Many many many projects have been optioned for films because there is some kind of fanbase, but usually (almost always) the character is not widely known or popular outside their bubble...

I find this notion strange. By this reasoning, the D&D movie shouldn't have characters... It's a D&D movie, so that IP name is part of the fanbase draw. The studio will also be looking at the most well-known characters within that IP to further draw fans, which using Drizzt would. He's not the...

An elf that looks like a human that is ethnically black would look nothing like a drow (gray/purple/jet black, red eyes, white hair). No one is going to confuse a dark (brown) skinned elf for being a drow.

Expect Elves to be black, asian, caucasian, and everything else. Same for dwarves and any other "races" in FR.

Most likely "Dungeons & Dragons" will be in the title, either as the main title or subtitle, such as "Dungeons and Dragons: The Crystal Shard" or "The Crystal Shard: Dungeons & Dragons". D&D is the brand name they are selling, not FR or any specific character name. If the studio still wants...

Evil drow don't have to be included. That being said, most paintings depict the drow with purple & gray skin, which is probably what we would get. The makeup department would create a look that is distinctly non-human, which makes sense considering that no ethnic group looks like drow anyway...

Harry Potter adapted the books. The MCU adapts comic book stories all the time. LotR had to adapt. Drizzt or any other known Forgotten Realms book/character would need to be adapted to the screen. It's exactly the same.
