    How to manage all the conditions and effects?

    If you are used to 4E the 13th Age conditions are a bit confusing since stuff with the same name has different effects. It's not a big deal though if you have the reference handy for the first few sessions. Vulnerable, dazed and ongoing damage are the common ones, the rest are used quite sparingly.

    There's not much buzz here on enworld-but there's a reasonably active Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/668357446642499 The G+ group doesn't have much traffic, but most of the key community people are active there, including Rob Heinsoo and Jonathan Tweet.

    I've seen several dozens of characters in play, and the most handy backgrounds are always those that just represent what your character has learned. If you don't have a great idea, just default to... (1) How / where has your character grown up? What did he/she do until he/she became an adult...

    I think your suggestion is fine. The save here represents that the PC somehow manages to get his head above water to catch a breath. Apart from that, drowning shouldn't be too bad initially (while of course deadly in the long run). Trained apnoe divers can hold their breath for over a minute...

    I second the "traps as part of the encounter". it makes sense. If the Dungeon Overlord instructs his goblins to create a pit trap, he would have that place guarded by some orcs to make sure those pesky intruders don't just disarm the trap. It also helps to stack the power balance in his favor...
