    Non lethal/Subdual Damage

Sure, if you actually want to impale them, you can just stabilize them after the fact. But sometimes you don't want to do serious harm to them, or are too busy fighting to want to stop to treat a foe's wounds.

    Non lethal/Subdual Damage

My houserule to make it take a little more effort to subdue/knockout a foe instead of killing them is this: when the PC hits for enough damage to kill a foe, they can either take the kill, or roll a second attack vs the target's Fortitude defense. If this attack succeeds as well, the target is...

    Anemic Horses

My houserule is to simply add a medium load category: encumbrance exceeding the light load reduces the horse's speed by 2 - both realistic and not crippling, in my opinion. More than twice the load results in the actual 'slowed' effect of having the mount's speed reduced TO 2.

If you don't like minions - how would you do it?

I quite like the suggestion of a hp "die roll"; but rather than tying the die size to race (ie d4 for kobolds), what about tying it to the monster's role? For example, smaller dice for lurker/artillery minions, larger for brutes/soldiers. I would just be careful to avoid making the die too big...

    Swimming in plate armor??

Hey, one thing that's been bothering me is the tiny armor check penalties. I know it frees up options and thus makes the game more enjoyable for warriors, but a -2 to swimming checks for plate? That seems pretty hard to take, since even with the additional penalty for a shield most warriors...

Return of the Burning Plague (Updated)

Hey, if anyone's interested, my group ran thru Chris's adventure and I posted a detailed report here: http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=221153 We had a good game, hope you do too! :)

    D&D 4E Veteran, balanced group gives 4E a whirl

I was planning on moving to 4E in June, but I wanted to wait for our playtest before preordering. We enjoyed it, the at will powers were fun, and if it turns out we don't like it after all, we still have all of our 3.5 stuff - it's not like we can't go back.

    Opportunity Attacks Clarification...

I believe he gets an opportunity attack on all and any who use a ranged or area spell, yes, but they could simply shift away, then cast; he could attack one with his Immediate Combat Challenge ability, but not stop his target from moving, since it is not an opportunity attack.

    D&D 4E Veteran, balanced group gives 4E a whirl

OK, thanks, that clears that up then. So foes still can't stream by the fighter after the lead one draws the hit, but shifting by kobolds can be done safely after one draws the Combat Challenge. Hmm. SOooo, that means that the fighter cannot stop someone from shifting, even if he hits...

    D&D 4E Veteran, balanced group gives 4E a whirl

I read that bit about only one immediate action as well, but I also read that you get one opportunity attack per opponent - and there is no point in stating that unless you are able to make more than on AoO per round. The Boneclaw (I believe) has a Relentless Opportunist ability which allows...

    D&D 4E Veteran, balanced group gives 4E a whirl

With the rules for diagonals, most distances are the same - theres no real difference created by direction.

    D&D 4E Veteran, balanced group gives 4E a whirl

My 'credentials', in case anyone cares: started with the red box at age 10, moved thru Advanced, 2nd, 3rd, and 3.5, enjoying the changes with each version and gaining 24 years of experience. My players have all played for at least a few years, sometimes more. I think the general opinion was...

    D&D 4E Veteran, balanced group gives 4E a whirl

I ran a playtest with the pregens last night with my group, using Chris Field's version of Return of the Burning Plague. We had four players, who chose the fighter, the cleric, the warlock, and the wizard - so all the 'roles' were covered. The group battled thru the kobold encounters while...
