    Wait... This doesn't seem balanced

    Minions are meant to be put out for characters nearer there level. Thats why you can have so many in a balanced encounter. My idea would be to keep 2-3 Vampire minions and use some basic zombies for the rest. Im not sure if they have stats for them yet, but with 4e its really easy to make them.

    My group has done one of the D&DXP adventures, plus a home brewed game. In each, all of the classes stood out and it was great. Sounds like they had fun too in your game. Dont you just love the minion rules!! The image of a party standing around after having defeated hordes of monsters is great.

    I would just stick with a theme and story for the character. Mechanics-wise its gonna be a whole different ballpark. And unless you feel comfortable starting a mid level game in a new system, then i would do what wizards suggests and wrap up the campaign before 4e comes out.
