D&D 5E Skills - Does anyone actually like the way they're headed?

Exactly. Your explanations make total sense. It would seem that a game system would have to favor either realism or involvement for everyone. Or would it? Speaking in D&D Next terms, check this out: Level 1 (proficiency bonus +4) 3 (proficiency bonus...

D&D 5E Skills - Does anyone actually like the way they're headed?

The DM Guidelines actually do not state this. D&D has never had this philosophy. Let's say I have a tree that requires a DC15 skill check to climb. That tree in the world has a set DC, regardless of who you are. Every published adventure, furthermore, uses this method of set DCs. That is what...

D&D 5E Skills - Does anyone actually like the way they're headed?

I agree that we don't need tons of fiddly +1s and +2s going around like in 3.5/4e; the clean, efficient approach is refreshing. Still, if the proficiency bonus in trained skills went from like +4 to +10, the characters would actually feel trained.

D&D 5E Skills - Does anyone actually like the way they're headed?

I agree, it is very easy. But, whether you had +1 or +5 at level 1, it's still just as easy. I am not arguing that it should be less easy, just that training should actually feel like training. This year, I practiced rock climbing, guitar playing, singing, and Spanish. I am definitely way more...

D&D 4E What I miss about 4e (my preferences of course)

4e suddenly made non-magic classes interesting, with lots of cool options, and no longer totally overshadowed by spellcasters (especially at higher levels). At the same time, spellcasters felt less magical. They had mechanical, blocky powers confined to the same format at martial classes. So...

    D&D 5E Conditions

It does increase game speed, but I am never one to sacrifice immersion for the sake of speed. In this case, simply have a flat-footed type AC takes you maybe a few seconds to figure and write on your character sheet, and doesn't increase game complexity much at all.
  18. Esper the Bard

D&D 5E Skills - Does anyone actually like the way they're headed?

I've been running the D&D Next playtest rules, and I am still trying to come to terms with the skill system. My criticism of skills is that the proficiency bonus just isn't substantial enough. At Level 1, someone trained in a particular skill is a mere +1 better than someone who has no...

D&D 5E The last Playtest - any chance of updates?

The druid wildshape is in big need of repair, and it sounds like it's getting a major update in the near future. Unfortunately, it looks like we're stuck with the very restrictive skill and feat system.

D&D 5E Spells That Still Need to be Fixed (September Packet)

I completely agree that the Cure spells should harm undead, and the Inflict spells should heal them (especially the Cures harming undead). I don't think I'll ever cut these elements out of my game. Unless something is glaringly broken, I don't sacrifice evocative storytelling for the sake of...
