D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

I like 2024 rules better for surprise than 5E or 3E, but they do give a lot to defender in an ambush. So I modified it to:; If you are surprised your initiative is as if your rolled "1" on initiative roll. Or 5 if you have advantage on initiative from some effect. It still prevents double turn...

D&D 5E (2024) Feedback wanted: Spend death save failures for additional hit dice

Great at 1st level, probably suicidal at 10th I would rather have HDs not reliant on Short rests at all. When you take Dodge action you can spend one of your HDs. at 5th level you can spend up to 2 HDs at 11th level you can spend up to 3 HDs at 17th level you can spend up to 4 HDs

roles in PHB are 95% for combat and D&D is primary intended for only roleplay? now, dont get me wrong, I love good RP as much as the next guy, but saying that combat is not meant for D&D, that was essentially made as a wargame is a bit strange.

depending how you imagine it. Say you fighting several enemies as a group. one is next to you and 2 are at your wizards face. with 1st attack you might use warhammer to Push that opponent from you, so you avoid AoO then switch to great ax to cleave at the two at your wizards side. then if one...

    D&D 5E (2024) This Feels Like 4E

it would be still less than a caster. sure it might be few per turn, but on most turns situation will be one or two masteries that could be useful. Casters could have a choice of 15+spells to pick from later on. maybe one solution for simpler fighter(if that is even possible) is to trade 2...

yes, we cannot have anything interesting for martials to do every turn. That is only for casters....

that is why weapon mastery needs to be weapon agnostic as much as possible. IE: 11th level fighter with action surge. 6 attacks. 1st attack, topple then topple until you succeed at it. Graze if you miss if you hit your downed target, might as well cleave next to it. sap your downed target so...

bag of rats can be exploitive, what is the problem in making one attack with a greatsword and other with a hammer or 2shortswords?

well, per rules, you can do that. also, I approve of hitting people with d20 for various reasons, especially when they play a rogue and do not know sneak attack rules by 3rd session...

    D&D 5E (2024) This Feels Like 4E

If I have 6 weapon masteries, I want option to use any of them on any given round. that is why masteries should have been like BM maneuvers. as for armor, if I have decent dex, I might carry stealth and non stealth armor. IE: 14 dex and full plate is 18 AC, but I might have breastplate for...

https://www.enworld.org/threads/an-alternate-weapon-mastery-system-im-noodling.700545/#post-9168560 posted more than 2 years ago that with mastery being tied to specific weapon, this will be the result of it.

D&D General Using Paladin and Warlock to Remake Bard (+)

Also, if bard is a halfcaster, maybe ability to learn any spell could be default feature. or making bard 2/3rd caster. 7 level of spells, at class levels: 1,4,7,10,13,16,19

yes, but I would also add STR or DEX to damage, simply to have more damage and to prevent dealing "1" damage on attack. that is so underwhelming. for 19-20 min str and no STR bonus to damage, that greatsword better deal 3d8 damage I was more in 10,14,16 line(also I hate odd scores and cant...

D&D General Using Paladin and Warlock to Remake Bard (+)

off topic, but more times this gets mentioned, more I think that we only need one category of weapons and all are proficient. Extra attack(s), masteries, styles, feats, maneuvers, attack riders, basic investment in STR or DEX are more than enough to distinguish "martials" from "amateurs". as...

D&D General Using Paladin and Warlock to Remake Bard (+)

Agree with most, but... I would improve d4 to d6 simply because I hate that cursed die. Halfcasting is OK for bards if compensated elsewhere, I even have the table for halfcasters that gain new spell levels at the rate of full casters, but capped at 5th level and keeping Spell point budget...

no if the target is not on coach. if the ride is not too bumpy(DM rule) and you both are in the same frame of reference then I would say you could Aim.

I'm more for Pillars 2, where you have mobile HQ. Ship, later converted into air-ship.

D&D 5E (2024) Move over Owl and Bat, the best 2024 familiar is a Deer!

you did not used YOUR movement so that does prevents AoO, but you did moved during your turn, and Aim is prevented if you moved during your turn. And also it goes against basic logic of aiming in general.
