I was thinking maybe giant crocodile (CR 5) instead of grells... maybe it is too strong? Along the death tyrant? And I like the portal idea also.

I like the beholder idea, they never faced one... What if I use a Death Tyrant as the "eye" of the creature and two other monsters as his claws/ tentacles? Any ideas on what kind of CR I should be looking to those monster/ claws as to not overwhelm the party?

Oh, for the record, they are going to a demiplane to stop an eldritch abomination from entering the material plane.

I'm looking for suggestions for a challenging encounter for my campaign 'finale'. Any creatures/ ideas are welcome since I'll reskin it to match the campaign tone. I'm planning to have a large map on roll20, to let the PCs face some kind of minion troop before facing the proverbial "end boss"...

Yeah, I thought about that. But I have 15+ races in my homebrew and no subraces so it would be a lot of work. A feat would make it easier in the end, even if I have to let non-humans get the 4th level feat earlier...

How would you do the tiefling 'race' as a feat? I mean, instead of choosing a tiefling character, you go for any other race you want and then add the tiefling/ infernal blood/ devil heritage feat. So you can be a halfling, elf or maybe a goliath with demon blood if you want to. I was thinking...

So, the boss battle was brutal! The party won by the skin of their teeth (and one of them had to be raised after it), thanks for a bit of luck, and despite their terrible tactics (after 9 levels they still can't fight as a team). Now I'm having some kind of 'epilogue' where each of the players...

Funny thing is that the Monk almost never uses stunning strike. He used it only once in 9 levels, I think, prefering to keep his ki to do flurry of blows. But yeah, it's something to think about. I'm still in the fence about adding minions to the fight, I'm worried that the round will take too...

So, we'll be having my homebrew campaign 'Grand Finale' in a few weeks with an all or nothing fight (no fleeing, no surrender) against the BBEG. It's going to happen at a big city square and the BBEG will keep the fight at ground level, for campaign reasons. My question is: how balanced is it...

I think the cleric speaks draconic! I'm not sure we have anything a chimera would see as treasure, but maybe if we give enough sheep... or the paladin, as Lackhand suggested :D But those elves are just skin and bones, I'm not sure it would be a good offering. The ranger's player want to kill...

Thanks everyone for the replies! About our group, there are four of us, all 3rd level. We don't actually need to kill the beast, but we need enough blood to fill a vial. I was thinking about a dragon's dogma chimera (oops, looks like I can't post links here), so flying and fire-breathing is bad...

Me and some friends are playing our first d&d campaign and looks like we have to hunt a chimera... we have some prior fantasy knowledge so we know whar's it (big lion-goat-snake monster), we just don't know how dangerous it is. Our dm said it's ok for us to ask around, as long as we don't ask...
